That's right (some research there?!), and my good friend John O'Reilly, with whom I had dinner last week, as one of the winners - he is now leader of Elmbridge Council, while I never dipped my toe in again as a candidate for electoral office. (My late chairman at Harris, John Hanvey, used to say "try anything once except for incest and folk dancing"). And if anyone doubts my non-aligned status here, overall I have voted about equally for Conservative, Labour.and Liberal (Democrat), and also for Greens and UKIP!

But not Patriotic Socialist Party? Yet, anyway.

That's right (some research there?!) Yes - nosing around to see how the old Central ward used to perform. (Totally OT, but I will add that I found your monograph on the Dukeries extremely useful when writing up my Special Subject at university.)

Thank you, Tangent - as it was one of the lowest selling books of all time in History, I'd be interested to know what your Special Subject was!

Back on topic, though I think UKIP will do very poorly in Carfax, the other two byelections tonight will be an interesting test of their popularity in to contrasting but potentially favourable areas - a Kent seaside area and a predominantly working class Labour ward, though also in the south.

Did you find Oxford city council results from that period online? (Cambridge of course is available back to 1945)

Carfax is a strange ward and one of that small number of wards where I have been an elector. It'll be hard to call but I'm going to go for a narrow Labour hold over Green. Extremely difficult to call. Surprisingly strong tory vote recently really. Turnout will be woeful - surely this has to be in with a shout of some sort of record.

Is it mispelt on the results you have or is that a typo on your part? I wonder if C. Noyce is Chris Noyce who turned up contesting elections in Harrow a few years later and is the sole LD councillor in the borough now Presumably Towse was elected at a by-election some time between 1979 and 1982 as he is showing as the incumbent in 82 for the seat won by Hurst in 1979

Yes, Adrian Towse was elected in a byelection, I think after Michael Hurst, a Politics don at St John's, went off to the USA. Of course the Michael and John O'Reillys who appear several times are in fact the same person, now councillor for Hersham South (Elmbridge). It was indeed Chris Noyce. I was pleased to be the only candidate in 1979 who beat the alphabetical order!

Interesting that a byelection many of you have predicted UKIP will win isn't a subject for much discussion... UKIP wins seem to have become part of normal politics...

The turnout in Carfax is said to be a whopping 8.6%.
