Interesting that they did make an approach to the Liberals.

Hilariously, FI nearly won a precinct in Södermalm (17.7% in Högalid 8 Bergsund N: Social Democrats just pipped them with 18.3%).

The SD's won't back the government's budget proposal; fresh elections are possible, though not yet certain. The Left still has a poll lead.

Finger in the air predictions: 1. SD to lose seats as the electorate fail to appreciate being dragged back to the polls. 2. Christian Democrats to be chucked out of the Riksdag, and the FI vote to collapse, as the larger parties squeeze the vote. Left to narrowly survive a severe Social Democrat squeeze. 3. Social Democrats refuse to engage the Liberal People's Party again unless utterly desperate.

What would the voters who voted Swedish Democrats have preferred? Not to have an early election and the have the Swedish Democrats prop up a government that refuses to have anything to do with them and implements policies the complete opposite of what SD voters want. There's no point in voting to give people the power that comes with elected office if they don't actually use that power. I hope you are wrong and that the electorate do reward the SDs for what they have done but even if they don't it would still have been the right thing for them to have done. Well done the Swedish Democrats.

The situation is similar to the one in the Netherlands with the PVV voting against the budget and VVV being forced into having an early election.
SD Will do well to keep their vote where it was at the last election and the moderates will be hoping to make some gains from these new elections.

Well done the Swedish Democrats. I do take your point, but in situations like this, the reaction of the electorate can be unpredictable. They may well increase their vote as you say, the polls suggest holding up/statistically-insignificant drop in support, or it could follow what I suggested. I don't think they've done the wrong thing per se, but moves like this can be tactically quite dangerous if not thought out properly. But as I say in my last post, the polls appear to be proving my hypothesis wrong. It looks like the KDs and the Centre who are taking the hit. I for one won't be sad to see the back of the KDs, who are utterly useless and represent another pointless fracturing of the Swedish mainstream Right.

I truly wonder why anyone thought that making a blanket guarantee to allow in any Syrian asylum seekers would be a good idea in a country with over 7% unemployment and a recent history of extreme civic strife. Take whatever moral view you want on the matter, but it just seems a bizarre move to make in the current atmosphere in Sweden.

Blunt words from the Swedish foreign minister: ""I think most people feel that we cannot maintain a system where perhaps 190,000 people will arrive every year. In the long run, our system will collapse. And that welcome is not going to receive popular support. I have to admit that there have been moments recently of very great disappointment. I have heard statements from [EU] member states that have been completely astonishing and very discouraging," she told the newspaper Dagens Nyheter"www.upi.com/Top_News/World-News/2015/11/02/Sweden-facing-collapse-because-of-refugees-foreign-minister-says/6781446474063/

Sounds like reality is starting to bite.
Anyway, Sweden hasn't had the real fun yet. Imagine how the large Syriac community will react to the arrival of a shitload of the people who persecuted them for generations.
