I meant Labour should be saying what Helmer's views are ... My mistake Ian. When you say 'The party' it always means Labour. Forgot! I was following on from the previous stream of consciousness that suggested within the terms of English usage that you were referring to the Conservatives. The answer would still be the same. Good enough for the Conservatives for many years..........No comment and no question.........But as soon as he stands for us!!!!! Pick over every thought, action and comment and start abusing him. Same old Conservatives! The nasty party...it seems?

I meant Labour should be saying what Helmer's views are ... It would seem that like many of the left you have learnt nothing from the last few weeks. Yelling "homophobe" and "bigot" at Helmer would be completely self defeating. The kind of Labour supporters who might vote tactically for Helmer will not for the most part be social liberals.

Labour should be pointing out that he supported the Thatcher and Major governments and that he is no socialist.
The tories should try to paint themselves as safe hands and try to monopolise the establishment vote.

The fella's a veritable Bufton Tufton in terms of his views and I know a couple of Catholic friends of mine who live in Newark who are almost speechless at his candidacy; their daughter said it was as if UKIP had decided to select somebody who had offended anyone and that meant they couldn't select Nigel Farage because "we know he loves the Germans. Well, at least one of them." She is 8 years old.

Saw this on Mike Smithson's twitter Mike Smithson @msmithsonpb · 4h UKIP using LibDem style bar chart to win over the anti-CON vote in Newark It doesn't quite say "Labour cannot win here vote UKIP" but that is the implication. My guess is that we'll see quite a few of this type of bar chart leaflets from UKIP in their target seats next year.

bar charts go away ................ I hate this type of leaflet One of the biggest obstacles UKIP will face in gaining Westminster seats is the fear of being a wasted vote. To overcome this UKIP, like the Lib Dems before them, will have to persuade voters in its target seats that "UKIP can win here" and that means bar charts. I'm suspect that you'll have to get used to them.

When he went to the House of Lords (as Lord Chelwood), he led the revolt against the Poll Tax. Here he is in action. Incidentally, my favourite name for a Conservative MP is the member for St Marylebone from 1928 to 1932, Sir Rennell Rodd.

My favourite name for a Britain's Got Talent contestant is Paul Potts, also I am now of the opinion that UKIP are about to win their first Westminster seat.

also I am now of the opinion that UKIP are about to win their first Westminster seat. You could be right about that The Tories really need to win this one. They haven't won a by election in government in a quarter of a century since Richmond in 1989. They had a huge majority at the last election and they have by all accounts thrown the kitchen sink at this election. I still suspect they will win by if they don't after trying really really hard and being up against a UKIP candidate who is less than perfect it will look terrible for them. The worst outcome for them would be a UKIP win. A Labour win would actually be less bad because it would enable them to trot out their "Vote UKIP get Labour" line, however it would still be bad. For UKIP a win would be a massive boost, it would overcome in large the 'electability' issue they have with Westminster elections and that will help them enourmously in 2015. If they don't win then it wouldn't be good for them but it wouldn't be a disaster. They seem to have managed expectations quite well about the scale of their task (the were a whopping 50 points behind the Tories in 2010) and people are for the most part not expecting them to win. What they do need to do however is arrive at least second. They have had a series of second places in Westminster by elections, people are expecting them to be second. Anything less that that would seem like going backwards and losing 'momentum'. Labour don't seem to be featuring very prominently in this by election. A third place finish for them should be bad but won't be because it is what people are expecting. Anything better that third will be a boost for them.

It would however be a double edged sword for UKIP. Helmer would be under immense scrutiny and ever vote he casts will be construed as UKIP policy effectively forcing the party to take positions on things where don't want to.

I meant Labour should be saying what Helmer's views are ... Golden rule of elections - don't attack the party in second place (unless you are the incumbent of course).
