But then I think to myself, is it just the symbols that people are attached to in this case? If so it ought to be possible to make careful adjustments that lean more in a reality based direction.

I think so. The definitions could be tweaked but how often would the tweaking take place? As census questions were being crafted perhaps?

I know they aren't. What I'm getting at is that in your suggestion, the definitions would need to be tweaked on a semi regular basis and census preparation would seem ideal as it slots into other ONS stuff.
I wonder how many people self define as C1s? Dental hygienists for example might not believe themselves to be skilled manual workers.

Conservatives best price at Stan James currently 8/15, Betfair 1.31 roughly 2/7 (so a tenner at SJ will return you 15.33 and at Betfair 12.86).
8/15 is an insane price. I'd jump on it even if they limit you to twenty quid.

Why would be be in Retford anyway? It was removed from the constituency at the last boundary review.

Ben Page on Sky News just now mentioned that UKIP 'won' Newark in the European elections. UKIP did of course carry Newark & Sherwood by a margin of about 400 votes. I should imagine that the UKIP lead over the Conservatives in the Sherwood section of the seat was larger than that and thats before you add in the Rushcliffe part of the seat

Will Farage be kicking himself if UKIP DO win in Newark?

Will Farage be kicking himself if UKIP DO win in Newark? No. He will be delighted. He will comment and praise. He will be free to roam and campaign. He will not need to worry about holding it at the GE. Does Helmer have to give up EU seat if/when elected at Newark? If so he will be in a high risk position of being MP for a short time only and being financially very disadvantaged. He has adopted a very high risk strategy for the party.

Given Helmer's career before being a politician, I'm quite sure he isn't in financial difficulties.

Helmer may well do Indeed so dok. Noted your stream of humour in the face of temporary reverses. On mornings like this it is well to remember that we all have mornings of triumph and of extreme loss. One so soon may turn into the other. Events will often decide and cycles in approval are inevitable. We may look at one another from changed aspects ere long.
