Local Candidates for Local People, yes, yes. Very Birmingham. especially in that quarter of North Brum, Oscott returns the local Tory there occasionally.

Ah, official comedy turnout levels. Why the hell was this by-election called, again?

The circumstances are remarkably similar - especially in the Tory candidates being "community politician" types who can transcend their "core" support. Given that it was fairly obvious how Sambrook was going to fight this campaign, was it really beyond Labour to pick somebody local? And at least this result has made Liam Byrne look a prat, if you want a silver lining

Brum is normally good at council results, the final figures must be known !

There's something faintly awe-inspiring about the pointless pissing away of a seat. Though all parties do it from time to time so...

I think that Rotherham MDC seat last spring was the last time before today we managed it in a by-election. Would be interested to see Brum Labour's "justification" for forcing this contest.....

My faith in humanity has been restored. Forget about the party labels and this is so obviously the right result. On the one side you have a dedicated local activist who has worked his patch for a number of years and is obviously committed to the area. On the other side you have a carpet bagger who is there solely because she wants to be on the council and got nominated because she is a close ally to the Deputy Leader of the Council.
Perhaps this means that later this year Lorraine Owen will once again be telling the good folk of Stechford and Yardley North just how committed she is to representing them on the council.
Well done Gary, you deserve this result.

I wasn't expecting winning there. Remarkable that the right is winning places like that mid term really. Well done Gary - I'm no local expert, but it is obvious that you were the true local champion.

For the reasons stated if this had been Joe Bloggs standing for the tories then would have been a comfortable Labour hold. The circumstances made it totally stupid when you look at it to call it.

While I agree, losing somewhere you won in 2008 is a really poor show by the labour party. Yes you had a strong opponent, but you should have won.

Of course and no denying that but I have just been told of a couple of things that makes the defeat worse for Brum Labour ...

There's something faintly awe-inspiring about the pointless pissing away of a seat. Though all parties do it from time to time so... Not only pointless but maybe permanent. I can see him being very hard to prise out. It does mean that the Tory candidate in May won't be Sambrook for the first time since 2007, so the result will be quite interesting.
