There are two by-elections towards the end of March for the Common Council of the Corporation of London. As the Council is non-partisan I do not include it in my list of elections and vacancies. The Portsoken Ward by-election will most certainly feature a serious Labour Party attempt to get a member elected to Common Council. Our elections are certainly not non-partisan, and we do have Party political candidates in some wards (such as Portsoken where there is a by-election next month). These are of course your lists of vacancies and contests, ME, but, for the sake of completeness, I'd suggest that it is helpful to include all local authority by-elections in the country above Parish/Town/Community Council level, and I'd therefore ask you to choose not to exclude just one principal council in the country (the City of London Corporation), especially considering the Corporation's wideranging local government areas of responsibility - it is a Police Authority in addition to having all of the usual Planning, Education, Housing, Environmental and other responsibilities of a London Borough Council.

I suspect ME might think to exclude the Isles of Scilly as well, the other sui generis council. I probably agree though with cityslicker. Stranger things have happened.

13th March - 8Shropshire UA, Ludlow North - Conservative resigned I have just spent a weekend break in Ludlow. There is also a Ludlow Town Council (Whitcliffe ward) by-election on the same day, being contested by two independents and two 'no descriptions': www.shropshire.gov.uk/media/816760/Statement-as-to-Persons-Nominated-Ludlow-Town-Whitcliffe-Ward.pdfMuch to our surprise we found that our self-catering cottage in Lower Raven Lane was owned by the first candidate listed on the SOPN. Inside the cottage was a framed photograph of the owner's father and mother in mayoral regalia: at some point in the past the father had been Mayor of Ludlow. Trivia time over.

Priscilla Toop, proposed by Penelope Bridstrup. How wonderful. And all four candidates have addresses with the same river in them, and two are in houses with almost identical names in the same road.

Hawick & Denholm will be held on 22 May 2014, the same day as the European Elections, and possibly the last possible date for the poll. It's certainly the last Thursday on which it could be held.
