Warnham and Rusper Green 119 Lab 65 Con 868 LD 103 UKIP 335 turnout 20.08% Con - 58.2% (+3.2%) UKIP - 22.5% (-7.7%) Grn - 8.0% (+8.0%) LD - 6.9% (-7.9%) Lab - 4.4% (+4.4%) That's a very derisory turnout, and whilst it was always going to be a one-horse race knowing both the area and the Conservative candidate, I'm very happy to see us jump from nowhere to third. I wonder who my grandmother voted for...

WIGAN Winstanley Lab hold Marie MORGAN (Labour Party Candidate) 746 Andrew COLLINSON (UK Independence Party) 421 Stan BARNES (Community Action Party) 326 Michael WINSTANLEY (The Conservative Party Candidate) 180 Steven HEYES (The Green Party Candidate) 55 David BOWKER (Independent) 27 John SKIPWORTH (Liberal Democrats) 19 This does rather emphasise just how much the LD vote is disappearing in the north-west Bwahahaha. Yes, it does. You should see Cumbria, we're struggling to get dozens there. Suggesting that a terrible result in Winstanley represents anything for us more widely really is desperate.

I think the two Weaste & Seedley by-elections in Salford are rather more indicative of current Liberal Democrat performance in metropolitan areas that they used to hold.

We have some very specific problems in Salford that are damaging our performance worse there than elsewhere.

The candidate used to live in London. He was in days of yore a LD cllr in Harrow (Marlborough war I think). S possibly he volunteered. Hats off to Erlend for an excellent memory. John Skipworth's performance yesterday contrasts with his by-election win in Roxbourne ward, Harrow, in November 1985: www.harrow-elections.co.uk/resources/1978Roxbourne.pdfJohn held the seat until 1998. If you look closely at the 1982 result you might recognise someone!

The ballot papers rejected for want of official mark affected the result of the election.

What was the story behind the unseating petition and by-election in that ward in 1978? If you hunt around my web site you will find a fulsome explanation of the event. I remember as if it was yesterday attending the judgment at the High Court, yet it was 35 years ago..........

I firsts met John in the 92 GE helping in Cowley St and most recently a few weeks ago helping at a London Lib Dems action day where he mentioned he was in the NW although not the byelection.

If you hunt around my web site you will find a fulsome explanation of the event. I remember as if it was yesterday attending the judgment at the High Court, yet it was 35 years ago.......... I found it...what surprised me was how decisively that Labour won the by-election. Two reasons. People in the ward felt they'd in some way been cheated by the declared result in May and wanted to put things right. Second, there had been quite an improvement in Labour's popularity over the summer of 1978, to the extent that Sunny Jim Callaghan was expected to call a General Election that autumn. If I remember correctly, just before the by-election took place Callaghan went to the TUC and teased the delegates, singing a little ditty ("Can't get away to marry you today, my wife won't let me") but then made it clear on by-election day itself he WASN'T going to the country. Big mistake.
