surprised and pleased by the result in Dudley. It is the kind of area that UKIP should be looking to pick off Labour voters and yet it appears very few despite an high profile candidate backed by her high profile Dad. Again this is confirmation for what I have been saying the top line polling figures betray what is happening in a lot of areas that contain marginals like this one where we are doing well and well enough to win a majority in 2015. It seems you are getting back the vote Labour lost to the BNP and Conservatives are losing out to UKIP.

However the reports I here is that since labour took over Dudley,, generally they have been well received and of course the Tories have imploded.

An interesting set of town council election results this week:
Witham South – Lab gain from Con Lab 324, Con 289, Green Party 106, Lib Dem 69
Bradford on Avon North – Con gain from Lib Dem Con 412, Lib Dem 313, Independent 226
Horwich Church – Lab gain from Con Lab 279, Lib Dem 278, UKIP 96, Con 81, Green Party 30
Hemsworth Fitzwilliam – Lab hold Lab 153, No Description 69
Spare a thought for the defeated Conservative candidate in Horwich Church, Anne Galloway, who was defending the seat, but ended up fourth. In March she applied for co-option to a Lib Dem seat in Bridge ward, but the Council preferred a Labour party nominee. In June she defended another seat in Bridge ward, but lost it to Labour. This is third time unlucky for her against Labour.

I was aware of the two town council by-elections for Malvern town council. As Malvern town council has been the province of the Malvern Town Action Group with only 1 Conservative in 2007 – and overwhelmingly uncontested – I had treated them as non-political contests.
Presumably these two by-elections were called by UKIP, who predictably defeated Labour in Link ward (where the outgoing town councillor still sits as UKIP on Malvern Hills District Council), but lost against Keep Politics Out of Town Council in Chase ward..
On 25 June 2013, the council had made a co-option to fill a vacancy in Chase ward. There is another vacancy in Priory ward, but interestingly it is to be filled by co-option at the town council meeting on 1 October – so the appetite for elections appears to have diminished.
The by-election in Link ward was caused by the resignation of Michael Soley, elected in 2011 as Independent Malvern Town Action Group. Michael Soley was elected on to Malvern Hills District Council on 2 May 2011 as a Conservative, but it was reported on 9 February 2013 that he had defected to UKIP. There were calls locally for him to resign and stand for re-election under the UKIP banner, but this has not happened. He continues to sit as the solitary UKIP member of Malvern Hills District Council.
The by-election in Chase ward was for the seat previously held by Roy Harding (No Description). Keep Politics Out of Town Council won the seat.
Malvern Town Council comprises 20 members elected from six wards – Chase (4), Dyson Perrins (3), Link (4), North Malvern (2), Pickersleigh (3) and Priory (4).
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: Malvern Town Action Group 15, Independent 1, Con 1, Vacant 3 Elections on 5 May 2011: Independent Malvern Town Action Group 10, No Description 4, Independent 1, Non-Political Description 1, Vacant 4
In 2007, only Link ward was contested with two Green Party candidates defeated – the remaining 16 seats in five wards were uncontested.
In 2011, the entire council was elected unopposed.
The result in Chase ward yesterday was Keep Politics Out of Town Council 588, UKIP 208
The result in Link ward yesterday was UKIP 372, Lab 257

Many thanks for all the replies to my questions last night. From the rules that have been quoted, if I was that Hemsworth councillor and had wanted to stay on, I would have challenged the calling of that by-election. You cannot 'challenge' the calling of the election. All you can do is ask the Council - in advance of breaching the rule - to accept an apology for absence under the relevant Section of the Act. Such a resolution would 'restart the clock'.

Middle Englander - Can you show the changes of vote share in Seasalter since the last by-election on 2 May, when Conservatives held their seat with a majority of 83 over UKIP ? UKIP seem to be storming ahead in the seaside towns of Kent - with the obvious exception of Swale West county division which is not on the seaside! The new Swale West member has been distinguishing himself on the Kent County Council webcam meetings. Thank you most kindly sir!
