Torrington, Torridge DC David Cox, Independent Adrian Freeland, Independent Robin Julian, UKIP Phil Pester, Conservative Cathrine Simmons, Green SOPN: www.torridge.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=12230&p=0* Robin Julian is the newly elected County Councillor for Bideford South and Hartland. He lives about 40 minutes away from the ward - odd that UKIP couldn't find anyone closer - admittedly our candidate lives in Bideford, but its a darn sight closer than Hartland! * Adrian Freeland was the Lib Dem candidate for Torrington Division in May. * Phil Pester is former Councillor for Bideford South Ward from 2007-2011. * Cathrine Simmons is a perennial Green Party candidate in the area.

The Lib Dems will be confident of gaining the seat having missed out by just four votes last time. They field the same candidate, as do Labour and UKIP - the interesting mix here is the appearance of the defeated Padstow Conservative Councillor Stephen Rushworth who is the Tories candidate in what is his home division - it will be interesting to see what personal vote he gets. The 481 Indy votes could go anywhere so difficult to call.

Nor are the Liberal Democrats apparently defending their seat in Torrington, which is a bit of a surprise as the small towns in north Devon tend to have reasonable party membership. I wonder if I should contact Adrian Freeland of the Torrington branch of the Liberal Democrats (http://www.twdld.org.uk/branches.htm) to ask him why, or is he too busy with his campaign to win Torrington ward as an Independent?

Having heavily canvassed Fenside on two occasions including the best campaign I have run Nov 2008 by - BNP 279, BBI 141, Con 119, Lab 69, UKIP 24 if UKIP have put a decent effort in they must win this seat. Unless someone has found away to get the East European voters interested in politics. No BBI will give Labour some hope in Fenside and if UKIP have put a poor campaign in they could return the seat for the first time in 10 years. Sad to see no Eng Dem defend the seat but when your main man on the ground is the one who lost his seat small parties often then disappear. Charnwood should be an easy Labour hold

It is a bit of a strange situation when a small party loses one of only a handful of councillors in the entire country to a lack of meeting attendance. Why bother standing for election if you're not planning to actually do the job? And why wait to be disqualified for six months of non-attendance rather than just resign?

To be fair when I met him he was as keen as mustard but sometimes when people get elected and realise they cant really do much especially with just 2 cllrs interest drops off, plus smaller parties don't often have the required support these people need. I believe he did say in the local press he was not aware of the 6 month rule which really is a shame but then again no Cllr should miss that many meetings

Just a quick notification of a Town Council election tomorrow: Exmouth, Withycombe Raleigh Ward, caused by the sad death of long-serving Lib Dem councillor Jean Mitchell. Exmouth has 5 wards, all with 5 Councillors. Result in 2011 was 5 Lib Dems elected. Candidates Brian Toye Lib Dem Fred Caygill Conservative

Is the Independent (John Borland) of East Cambridgeshire of any particular interest?
A lot of these look like really boring contests. Also, it might appear that UKIP is replacing the Liberal Democratic Party as far as obligatory third party candidate goes.

Although individually they appear boring, I suspect that having ten on the same night will produce a lot of analysis and comment, so I would not cast doubt upon them just yet!

Well we are guaranteed at least two seats changing hands for a start.

One would hope that Committee Services were keeping a track and giving any poor attenders a nudge at something like the four month mark.

My laptop is too old to sustain a TweetDeck search for all 10 at once so I hope someone is watching for results!
