I've had a look at her various sites and she seems a bit naive more than anything else - I think the idea that EDL's loathing of Muslims could be dealt with by 'presenting evidene' to him, to 'explain his fears', is a very good example
Quite why anyone would want to reach out to the EDL is anyone's guess.
Its interesting that she said she had been asked to stand by the LD's. I do believe that is likely, because I know a friend of mine, whose mother was a LD councillor, told me that she had been approached similarly and stood even though she had no history of voting LD. She got elected and then took an active part in the party after the event.

On 20 June the Weybridge Labour Party tweeted they had selected "well-known local campaigner Martin Lister" for the by-election (Lister stood in Weybridge in the County Council elections, and in Weybridge South in 2010). When the nominations were released on 28 June though, no sign of a Labour candidate or even an invalid nomination. They haven't commented publicly on what happened. The UKIP candidate, Ian Lake, was the County Councillor for Weybridge for 16 years until 2 May when he lost his seat. He was a Conservative until earlier in the year. He was previously on Elmbridge Council from 1988 to 2000 for neighbouring St George's Hill ward (in 2000 all-up new boundaries elections all three Cons lost their seats to Independents). Pointless piece of trivia - the Ind candidate who stood in Weybridge South in 2008 was Kelvin McKenzie, former editor of 'The Sun', who stood on a campaign against the cost of car parking. After losing he promised to stand again, but never has. |

For those who follow Town Council elections there will be 3 in Maghull. One vacancy each in Maghull North, East and South due to three Labour resignations.
The wards last voted in 2011 with the exception of North which had a triple vacancy by-election earlier this year.

Maghull was 16 Lib Dem councillors Others Nil from 2007 to 2011 all except 1 elected unopposed , In 2011 Labour contested every seat and the result was Labour 13 Lib Dem 3 . Unfortunately most of the new Labour candidates had been drafted in and had not wanted to be councillors and these 3 are the latest to have resigned , There are candidates for Lab/LD and UKIP in each of the 3 by elections although the UKIP candidate in North ward has withdrawn and their candidate in South ward does not even live in Maghull but in Aintree in Liverpool . It is unclear to me how he is qualified to stand |

Isn't there some rule you can stand in a parish if you live within 3 miles of it or something (which I think Aintree would be in relation to Maghull). Alternatively he may work in Maghull

Yes, Pete - that is the rule - and when parties are struggling to find candidates for "politicised" Town Councils,
they often look at those from outside the town, but within the 3 mile limit. Many, of course, may qualify through
working or owning land actually within the town. By the way, we seem way off thread now!

I don't normally post town council by-elections, but there are a couple of interesting ones in Harwich on this date. There are vacancies in Harwich West and Harwich West Central wards (co-terminous with the district ward of the same name) due to the resignations of Ricky Callender and Claire Callender, both COnservatives. The cause seems to be pique - Ricky Callender was defeated for re-election as Harwich's county councillor, and the next day he and his daughter resigned from the town council. Both remain as district councillors.

West
District 2011: Lab 683/557 Con 671/547 CRP 180/138 Ind 177
Town 2011: Con 719/611 Lab 688/564/556/485 CRP 298/256 Ind 265
District March 2013: Lab 282 Con 220 CRP 163 LD 143

Note that the Tendring DC website doesn't give party labels for the 2011 town council elections, but I presume they were on the ballot paper.

I would have thought the inference is that it is a good idea for Labour everywhere to take UKIP seriously especially given that they are polling very well and the by elections are in an area where they had some good results in the most recent set of elections. Or would you have preferred East Anglian Lefty to have been completely dismissive? |

I see nothing which suggests anything other than Labour wins in both seats. I don't think that's the case. I expect Labour to win, because I expect Harwich UKIP to have no campaigning chops. But Harwich has identical demographics to a lot of places where UKIP performed incredibly strongly in May, and this time they won't have to contend with Ivan Henderson on the ballot paper. |
