Would I be right in thinking this set of results are the least promising for UKIP for a while?

I think that is probably a fair comment. The share of the vote in Weybridge was decent enough but it was disappointing to come third. Weston super Mare result was of course skewed by the strong performance by an Independent who may have take many potentital UKIP voters. I wouldn't have expected a better share in the two London seats than we got, but would have done so for the two in Essex

I know that there was only one Green candidate in 2010 Beverley as opposed to three Labour candidates but Labour have pulled well away from them here. I understand the circumstances but I would have hoped for a better result for us.

I wouldn't have expected a better share in the two London seats than we got, but would have done so for the two in Essex The Felsted result isn't good, but I can't say the village has ever struck me as a likely UKIP stronghold. What's possibly more significant is that the Conservative Party's travails elsewhere in Uttlesford aren't affecting them everywhere in the district. On the other hand, the Braintree East ward is deeply unimpressive for them, as they weren't too far off winning the county division. I expect they got more of their votes around Kelvedon, but I'd be surprised if they didn't take home a higher percentage in Braintree East in May than they got last night.

Still nothing on the district council website, nor have I seen any figures from tweeters I'm aware of in the local area. The local paper's website described it as Labour 'sweeping' to victory, but I'm unclear whether that means it was a decisive victory or just that they couldn't find the thesaurus.

So UKIP running Labour close, then - but why no Tories?

Close. Creditable UKIP results in contrast to most of the other results. Obviously the absence of Tory candidates will have helped though. Tory and UKIP combined outpolled Labour in Harwich in May and Labour tend to be stronger in the Eastern part of the town I think

To be precise, according to that article it appears he was turned down as a Conservative candidate for a previous by-election in a different ward, said that he would not stand as an Independent against the Conservatives and would always vote Conservative, and at the same time said he would be forming a new group called Weston First "to get new people onto the council" and then stood in this by-election as an Independent.
