"Mike Williams had been the independent Powys councillor for the town continuously from 1981 until his death in July, and in his 43 years in office he faced a grand total of one contested election."Powys historically in a nutshell.

Always a good sign when polls in a by-election have just closed:

Imagine how few the Conservatives would have got had they stood.

Imagine how few the Conservatives would have got had they stood. As no party has stood before except Independent & Plaid Cymru the percentages will all be up

North East Derbyshire Tories are lucky. Split opposition would help Labour there. Plenty of Reform voters round there. It'll be poor if Tories lose.

Machynlleth - Plaid Gain - Plaid 267 Ind 227 Labour 115 Lib Dem 81 Green 34 Reform 20 Plaid 35.88%, Ind 30.51%, Lab 15.45%, Lib Dem 10.89%, Green 4.57%, Reform 2.69% Back in 1997, I stood in a local town council by-election for the north eastern ward of the town on the same night as Wirral South but was told by the local party "We do not stand in local by-elections, we are focusing on getting Lembit elected. If you stand we will not support you" and so stood as an Independent Liberal Democrat and on a 50% turnout, polled 23% of the vote. I am glad to see that in the last 27 years or so, that attitude has now been replaced and that the Lib Dems now embrace standing in elections in Machynlleth

Not that it matters at all of course (except in terms of my own OCD) but it would have seemed more logical to have included the Pembrokeshire contest in part 1 and the Suffolk one in part 2.

Reform getting a risible vote in Powys can perversely be seen as a great result. They are often accused of having an inefficiently widely spread vote . With them apparently at around 20% in opinion polls Wales-wide it means elsewhere they must be performing very strongly. Whether they can organise effectively to fight elections properly in their better areas is another matter however

It would have been more logical to have one post, but that would have been too long to email out. Harlow was moved to Part II at the last minute to equalise the length of each piece.

Pembrokeshire is a Con gain Very much had the backing of the local newspaper, which still counts for something in Haverfordwest and its environs.
