They must have done well there when North Ayrshire & Arran was a safe Labour area with the Tories in a distant second. Funnily enough Ayrshire North used to be pretty solidly Tory as I recall. Bute & Northern Ayrshire was a Conservative stronghold from 1918 to 1983! And then they won the new 'Cunninghame North' that year, but the area never looked back and flipped to Labour in 1987, before the SNP held it from 2015 to 2024. Even at Holyrood, the Tories don't do all that well. I don't know how much of the Tory strength in 'Bute & Northern Ayrshire' came from Bute as opposed to Northern Ayrshire inc. Arran. One for ntyuk1707 perhaps. I'd stick with my neck out and say that Arran will be an island of blue of a sea of blue.

In the FPTP days, Labour won Arran in 1995 and 1999.

Before unitarisation, it was in Cunninghame district and again formed a single ward, which was held by Evelyn Sillars (Ind) until 1992, when it narrowly voted Conservative. On Strathclyde Regional Council, it was combined with the mainland around Largs (not Ardrossan) and was consistently Conservative.

I don't know whether there was any connection between the Independent Evelyn Sillars and the J Sillars who later held it for Labour, but they stood against each other in 1984 and 1988.

No relation of Jim Sillars, surely? I guess it's a common name. Especially in Clydeside and west Scotland. 1995 really was peak Scottish Labour. Second place in Perth & Kinross. The Tories just flopped everywhere then. Losing Bearsden & Milngavie from 1992! Labour dominated the Shadow Cabinet too.

There was a Scottish novelist and broadcaster called John Sillars who died in 1954 in the hospital at Lamlash.

His obituaries noted that "He was an authority on the history and folklore of Arran", and his novel "The McBrides", first published in 1924, is subtitled "A Romance of Arran". I suspect his other works were likely set there too.

The academic Stuart Sillars, who specialises in illustrations in literature, is Professor of English at Bergen University.
