It's ended up like that, but I was thinking of the general's gambit in 1968 with the elections. Someone from deGaulle's outer Inner Circle assured me The General was fully aware, that he couldn't win the referendum, and instead conducted it for having an excuse to retire. Perhaps just a mythification of his idol, perhaps true. Rejected by that cursed result: 52%/48%.

Le Figaro point out that Macron is obsessed with Marseille (and has thrown lots of resources at it). But it is a wipeout there pretty much, and every seat is likely to go NFP or RN.
Although it should be pointed out that Marseille has been tarted up a lot on his watch- but crime is through the roof.

Look at America Indeed. It's incredible though, it has had more extra spending from Manu than any other city. He goes a lot. It is clearly some sort of personal mission.

It's still an abject shithole beyond anything in the uk.
It's like San Francisco without the redeeming bits of that city.

Le Pen says she will seek a minority government if needed, a change of position.
Although everyone is pinning this on the man responsible anyway, and she probably reasons that she can continue to do so.

RN withdraws in favour of divers droite in Haute-Corse 2eme, so now a duel between that candidate and a Corsican nationalist.
Macroniste withdrawn in Alpes de Haute Provence 2eme, leaving a LR-RN versus LFI.
LFI says it will not enter any form of coalition with the Macronistas.
Xavier Bertrand (LR big beast) has announced he will support the PCF over the RN in Seine-Maritime 6eme.

Candidate deadline is finished, 210 withdrawals.
The LR president of the senate, Larcher, is currently at the Elysée.
Meanwhile, down in Nice, Estrosi's man from Renaissance has refused to stand down in favour of the NFP candidate who is taking on Ciotti. Goodness knows what to make out that. It's a brave man who tries to understand Niçois politics.

Why does Brittany seem to hold up well for Macron compared to other traditionally centre-right wing areas like Le Grand-Est?

Why does Brittany seem to hold up well for Macron compared to other traditionally centre-right wing areas like Le Grand-Est? Brittany isn't particularly centre-right in the grand scheme of things, but broadly speaking, regionalism and Catholicism (and anti-Catholicism!) have played a large role in its identity and politics. The strong regionalist and anti-clerical strands have always allowed for a strong left vote. Macron tapped into this. But not consistently - one of his lot lost to a regionalist last time out. The regionalism aspect has tended to keep support for the RN low, even though the Le Pens are Bretons. A similar thing can be seen in Corsica, where the RN have also just broken through. The real shock of the election is the RN doing outstandingly well in places that were deemed to be straightforwardly centre-right spots. Alsace-Lorraine for example.

Why does Brittany seem to hold up well for Macron compared to other traditionally centre-right wing areas like Le Grand-Est? It’s the sort of traditionally centre right area that trended well to the progressive left in recent decades, so Macron was initially a very good fit and it remains a much better fit for him vs the RN than places where the centre right vote was, well, more centre right.

Very interesting thanks both. Is this something the growth of Rennes and Nantes (I know now in a different region but culturally not so much) has fuelled or is just this one element alongside the regionalism?
