Fabien Roussel (PCF) beaten handily in Nord, in a seat where the RN took 50 per cent and wins on the first round. Not surprised, he was done the moment the election was called. Ruffin is also 20% behind his RN opponent and only 3% ahead of his Ens opponent m. Symbolic though as it has always been a PCF fief. It's basically the strip between Valenciennes and the Belgian border. Roussel topped the first round last time with 34 per cent before winning the second round. His RN opponent has gone from 32 per cent to over 50.

Melenchon has said he will stand down all of his third place candidates for the second round, and called for "not one seat" for the RN. The Greens have gone after Ensemble for not doing the same thing Melenchon doesn’t seem to know his voters very well if he thinks that they are going to vote against RN en-masse if they are against Ens or LR… There is a danger of overblowing this. I don't think there has been a single election where LFI/NUPES/NPF voters have actually broken for the RN over whoever their opposition is. And most of LFI's voters will be generically "left" voters who are likely to want the RN beaten whatever

Just needs to be more for one than the other.

RN is arguably closer to the average non-Bobo left wing voter than LR.

Many will still have a reflex to vote against the RN

This is a strange thing to say when a) a huge portion of voters for the left are not white, and b) it is Macron and allies who have insisted over and over during this campaign that the extreme right is no worse than any of the other opposition. Those are the people one should be concerned about voting for the Nazis.

In most of France, NFP voters are white French, and in most places where they are not, RN isn’t really in contention (and neither is LR).

What are the prospects of an absolute RN majority from what we have seen so far?

What are the prospects of an absolute RN majority from what we have seen so far? Most seats will go to a run off so it is hard to judge. However I have never thought that they would get a majority and while tonight's results look good that don't look good enough for me to change that judgement.

Darmanin takes 41 per cent in his seat, impressive in the circumstances.
