Bayrou has given the game away and said it's essentially designed as Macronista-Le Pen duel.
It's as if he's trying a greatest hits of French presidencies. Sacking a popular PM, dropping a recently-appointed PM in it with a snap election, appointing a woman nobody has ever heard off, getting into bother in the Pacific...and of course suddenly appearing on telly to dissolve the assembly.
He just needs to take delivery of some diamonds now.

The RN are leading in Ariège. In Clermont-Ferrand the Greens narrowly beat the "No to the EU, no to NATO - Communists for Peace and Social Progress" to first place which is just weird Yeah I definitely think that's a mistake.

I’d be surprised if it didn’t hurt him/help Le Pen in the 2nd round.

Apparently friday is the deadline for filing to be candidate. Expect lots of unvetted candidates who will explode in mid-air

A quick scan of the electoral code of France only gives me article L173: "The elections take place on the seventh Sunday following the publication of the decree summoning the voters."
But that would put an election at 28th July at the earliest?
I presume there is some special rule that applies in cases where the President opts to dissolve the assembly, but I don't see it.

Oh dear. Manu has made an offer to the PS, Greens and LR amongst others about joint lists. They have refused.
Manu is now in contravention of Bérégovoy's Iron Law. "Politics is like an andouillette. It should smell of shit, but not too much".

In case of dissolution the delay is between 20 and 40 days. So latest would be 14th of july I think. But that's the national day.
