I though it might be nice to have a separate thread for the new electoral year.
A few notes on the below: the list consists of parish level vacancies, for which an election has been called and a SOPN has been published; there are also a few vacancies where the deadline has passed and no SOPN has appeared (typically turn out to be either no candidates or an uncontested election), indicated by ?; [] indicates candidates nominated with no description; * indicates candidates elected uncontested; I make no warranty as to the completeness of the list - councils rearrange their websites, place notices in random locations, &c; dig in
9 May: Torridge, Great Torrington, Commons Conservators (15). ?
15 May: Carmarthenshire, Llandybie, Saron (2). 2x PC, LD, Ind Carmarthenshire, Llannon, Tumble (2). 2x Lab, 2x LD, Ind
16 May: Flintshire, Halkyn, Pentre Halkyn. []* Isle of Anglesey, Pentraeth. []*
21 May: Pembrokeshire, Herbrandston. 3x [] Pembrokeshire, Neyland, West. Ind, []
22 May: Carmarthenshire, Ammanford, Wenddu (3). 2x Ind* (NB one of these is the perennial Carmarthenshire Community Council candidate Wayne Erasmus of Gwlad, but standing under Ind this time).
23 May: Doncaster, Hatfield, Dunscroft. 3x Ind, Lab North Yorkshire, Eastfield, Eastway. Lab, []
Monmouthshire, Devauden. Con* Wiltshire, Melksham, Forest. LD*
East Lindsey, Mablethorpe & Sutton, Sutton on Sea North. [], Independant Community Volunteer (sic)
30 May: Malvern Hills, Pendock (2). 3x [], Dog walker Swansea, Gowerton, West. Ind* (NB this is also perennial Carmarthenshire Community Council candidate Wayne Erasmus of Gwald, standing under Ind)
6 June: Bridgend, Brackla, East. Con, Ind Monmouthshire, Monmouth, Town. Con, Lab

There may, or may not, be by-elections in Whitby West Cliff and Whitby Stakesby. A petition has been received for one, and the deadline for the other is in a few days.

A note has appeared on the Epping Forest website "Due to an error on the ballot papers for the wards of Loughton Broadway and Loughton Debden, the result of these 2 wards have been declared void. Candidates and agents have been consulted and further advice will be sought before next steps. We apologise for the inconvenience, and hope to resolve the situation as quickly as possible" www.eppingforestdc.gov.uk/elections-results-for-parish-council-elections/It appears that ballot papers for Loughton Debden parish ward were issued in polling district AT, whereas this polling district in fact lies in Loughton Broadway parish ward.

Surely it is not up to the Returning Officer or Council to declare the election void? Surely the courts are the ones?

Unfortunately they're removed the results from the website, but I find it hard to believe they showed other than easy LRA victories in both wards

Unfortunately they're removed the results from the website, but I find it hard to believe they showed other than easy LRA victories in both wards I don't think they ever put them up - I've been waiting for them to get back to me about them since soon after the other results appeared. (They also failed to upload the non-winning candidates in one ward, but they've fixed that now). But fortunately listener has resolved the mystery!

Surely it is not up to the Returning Officer or Council to declare the election void? Surely the courts are the ones? When I read the statement, it did occur to me that they did not specify who “declared” it to be “void”, or by what process. Half of me thinks that there might be something in election law which makes it different for parish council elections; the other half of me thinks that the Returning Officer decided to “declare” it thus, regardless of what the law actually requires.

The vacancies in Todwick (Rotherham) and Stanton Harcourt (West Oxfordshire) are to fill remaining vacancies on parish councils left inquorate on 2 May. Todwick had attracted no candidates and Stanton Harcourt had attracted 1 candidate for 6 seats. There are now 6 candidates for the remaining 5 vacancies in Stanton Harcourt, leading to a contested election on 20 June.
Dorset has also called elections on 20 June to fill the vacancies on 5 parish councils left inquorate on 2 May - Chettle, Evershot and three grouped parish councils - a total of 12 parishes in all. Even though two parishes in the Knightsford Group failed to attract any candidates this time round, all 5 remaining parish councils are quorate now. Chettle failed to attract any candidates on 2 May, but now has a contested election on 20 June, with 6 candidates chasing 5 seats.

4th July - Amber Valley, Heanor TC, West (originally slated for 11th July)
Also two more vacancies have just occurred. One in West ward (Reform councillor) and one in Loscoe ward (Labour). We will see if these also quickly receive calls for by-elections.
Current council: Labour 19 Reform 6 Vacant 3
