Alistair Carmichael will once again defend the "safest seat in the western world" for the Lib Dems, having held on since 2001, even in 2015 when the SNP are rumoured to have won in Shetland but not Orkney. Robert Leslie, an energy officer at Orkney Housing Association and former local journalist, is challenging again for the SNP as he did in 2019. He won't win, but will do far better than any other candidate without the words "Liberal" and "Democrat" after them on the ballot paper.

Crazy that there's now parliamentary candidates a full decade younger than me. It's when cabinet ministers start looking young... Or when Ex-cabinet minsters have Knighthoods. “Sir” Simon Clarke is four months older than me.

Always nice when a Nat comes to their senses and joins the unionist cause. Even if it is Team Red in this case.

Crazy that there's now parliamentary candidates a full decade younger than me. A full decade... Seriously? A former Prime Minister has, seven years later, returned as Foreign Minister, and is younger than me.

Liberal Democrat Hold
Alistair Carmichael MP (Liberal Democrat)
Obvious. No predicted surprises. Used to find Carmichael annoyingly smug, but have mellowed in recent years. Will be interesting to see what part he plays in the Lib Dem rebuild post-election.

He once wanted to punch me, and I put my hands in my pockets and grinned to give him a free shot. To his credit, he did not fall for it. What has he done with his sinecure? Square root of FA

The last non-Lib Dem/Liberal MP in this constituency served in the British Army in World War One, for temporal context.
