I'm slightly surprised there is no comment (on this thread at least) that the reason Dale pulled out was that the local LDs had found a quote from him stating that he didn't like Tunbridge Wells and only lived there because his wife wanted to. Which, in theory at least, means he might be up for standing somewhere else (although you'd have thought not in this GE on grounds of embarrassment). It also is pretty much the dream outcome for the LDs since a potentially dangerous opponent is removed and the Conservatives are both left looking silly (I think the reason for his withdrawal is the sort of thing that will cut through locally, and leave a bit of a bad smell) and in need of a replacement at even shorter notice than before. All on top of the mild embarrassment of a reasonably high-profile sitting MP showing that he wasn't up for the fight. Meanwhile, the Labour candidate is on Twitter making the entirely reasonable case that people should vote for what they believe rather than tactically, which is all very well but is an open admission that the tactical anti-Tory vote here is for the LDs. Personally I'd have that on the leaflet right next to the bar chart. He definitely doesn’t have a wife…

He did also say during the interview with Nick Ferrari that with the amount of hours he’s done on the radio over the years he couldn’t be sure that other potentially damaging comments wouldn’t be dug up that he can’t even remember himself. Which does sound like a general hazard a broadcaster standing for election could face these days as pretty much will be recorded on the internet somewhere That's a sound point, and a shame.

One can only assume after initial canvassing he's realised he's not going to get the nomination and this is a lesser humiliation that being soundly beaten tonight? He's quite possibly been very badly advised and/or had a very high opinion of himself and/or has no real insight into the local party where he lives. It will be the latter. He is monumentally wrong about most things and always has been.

I think that the answer is to simply pay it no mind. Any broadcaster or entertainer entering politics is bound to have said something off the cuff at some point. Better to own it, not wear a hair shirt and remind people about context and proportionality.

It's unfortunate for him. I don't agree with all the Iain Dale hate, I think it's a bit odd. I think he could be an asset to the party, as I said before, and I would not be opposed to him standing for us anywhere really. Hopefully not somewhere where it takes the Liberal Democrats only 12 hours to dig up dirt though. I don't think he is hated because he is quite personable; but he can be a prize chump over so many things and has been for so long.

The Tories should have prepared for that before his "announcement".

Maybe he could’ve gone with the line ‘yes it’s a shithole, but that’s why I’m standing, to make it better and drag you people up to civilisation.’ PS I’ve never been to TW is it really that bad.

Yes. We must all know how that feels. I do have empathy. He is a likeable enough chap. But the whole episode is condensed Ian Dale. Woosh Bam! I am standing. Resign from job and announcement on air. Then things creep out of the woodwork. Had he cultivated his own claque in the constituency? I doubt it. Did he have a local presence and write a column in a local rag? I doubt it. This is Ian. This is what you always tend to get. A total cock-up caused entirely by him.

Many of the local residents are ‘disgusted’?

Tunbridge Wells may be many things but it is not a shithole.

Told you - back to LBC with Iain Dale!! I know, I am listening to it now. It will be interesting to see whether he sticks with that. He clearly wants to be an MP, and 2029could be his moment. If he's on his best behaviour, i.e. not insulting constituencies, he will be in prime position to stand in a normally staunch Tory constituency that will go narrowly Labour in the likely landslide.

It hasn't gone unnoticed that Farage said back in March that he wasn't interested in spending time hanging around Clacton. Some people's luck with past comments washing off them is unrivalled.
