I can't off-hand think of a case of chicken-running that wasn't a defector (or somebody who had already lost a selection contest moving to a vacant seat.) What's more common is losing your marginal seat and then getting selected for a new and usually safer seat. I think the new member for Bexhill & Battle is definitely an example of chicken-running. Although I think he did try and initially get selected for a new seat just next door to his?

The 14% vote for the independent (a former conservative) is not something that can be ignored here and was the key to Truss' loss. That vote could quite easily go straight back to the conservatives next time, particularly if they select a local candidate who is similar to that independent. Or indeed, exactly that Independent. A sane Tory party would have been running him as their candidate in the first place and it’s the sort of statement about the Tories returning to their senses that might be picked up more widely. Too old. I think he'd be in his mid 70s by the next election, but getting him back into the fold would be a sensible option.

What's more common is losing your marginal seat and then getting selected for a new and usually safer seat. That said, Terry Jermy has lived all his life in Thetford and hasn't previously shown a burning desire to be a national political figure - no previous runs for parliament, nor candidacies for the EU Parliament that I can recall. Perhaps he'll decide that he does want to do it and in a couple of elections time he'll be apply for vacancies in Norwich or Cambridge or Peterborough, but I would be surprised. The more normal trajectory for local government figures unexpectedly elected to parliament is that they stand for re-election, get defeated as soon as the national political climate stops being favourable enough, then go back to local government as a more experienced figure. Is Norfolk going to get one of these new elected Mayors? Yes and no. Was meant to happen this year, but was delayed in order to coincide with the county council elections next May. Mercifully the terminology seems to be "directly-elected Leader" rather than metro Mayor though.

No, from what she said it sounds like she thinks he's still alive and happily retired in California. The link to Pennsylvania is that the Liberty Bell is located in Philadelphia, but I don't think she insinuated that Reagan ever lived there?

What is tragic is the number of people in that party who could not see through to the glaringly obvious fact that she was a monumentally, vacuous, stupid, SDP, Remainer, airhead, gormless nerk, despite me continually telling them!

He was born and brought up in Illinois then made his political career in California (after his acting career of course), there’s no Pennsylvania association at all I don’t think

And that was the limit to the family’s connection to the bank..

Sometimes it seems as though (almost) every failed right-leaning figure in British politics swims across the pond and dips their toes in American politics. In Truss' case it is simultaneously great content and quite pathetic.

Farage came over to America and tried to go somewhere in the right-wing mediasphere, talking about the border and all (years ago). He was also likely to get involved in Trump's campaign this time around if Reform completely floundered.
It makes sense, given there's relatively no language barrier.

He is probably the most successful British politician of the last generation. Even his solitary failure of getting into the commons has now been overcome.

Well I should parse my wording more discriminately. Farage has been personally electorally unsuccessful in non-EU-related elections until now, and when he's failed it's because he's aimed for tougher things. I should have said that those who presently don't think they can go anywhere in British politics in the moment, not infrequently seem to gravitate to American politics. So we're seeing this dynamic where Truss is now trying to do things in America. It's simultaneously entertaining but also a reflection on how sad of a figure Truss is that she's in this position.

Not just the right, but leftist media types too like Mehdi Hasan and Piers Morgan have gravitated to America too, in the latter's case he has sadly returned. Our gain your loss I suppose when it comes to this phenomenon.

As a rhetorical connection to an iconic Republican it works well enough if a bit tortured.
