and Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM). Patriots: Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Shouldn't the Gender Equality Committee be codenamed TRAN these days?

Very sarcastic analysis but one must remember that Strasbourg exists solely because the French insisted that it be there. MEPs historically sat for 3 days a week and the French insisted that for 1 day a week they sat in France in Strasbourg which is where in Alsace/Lorraine which they fought over the Germans several times. In reality everything should be in Brussels like the Commission and the main Parliament and in Brussels you speak English. But the ECB is in Frankfurt the successor to the Bundesbank and the Germans won the EMU project while the French get to keep Strasbourg for 1 day a week. Yet the menus if the area are in French and German because Offenburg is the nearest town in Western Germany across the border in the Rhineland.
Actually one of the most interested proponents of German unification and a friend of Helmut Kohl's was Charlie Haughey who supported him and gained structural funds for Ireland in doing so and helped reduce the political influence of Thatcher in Europe and in Washington.

Even the French weren't so silly as to insist that the Parliament transfers to Strasbourg one day every week. It sits there for one week of every month.

Even the French weren't so silly as to insist that the Parliament transfers to Strasbourg one day every week. It sits there for one week of every month. One week of every month but still it shouldn't be there at all. It's just a nod to the French arrogance claiming that French is still the language of diplomacy. The irony is that during the time of the Irish and UK in the EU we made English the working language of the assembly and diplomatic channels together. Something the French never got over. Ireland has a good reputation for making allies. Our first ambassadors were the monks who helped Christianise Dark Age Britain. We've had people rise to high levels in BBC as our accents can travel and a diplomatic diaspora to rivel God knows who due to emigration. Starmer and Benn know this hence they've started knocking on our door to try and get a better deal for trade etc into Brussels and Frankfurt where we have access and friends. We even got to Iceland before Erik The Red and to America before the Vikings with St Brendan as replicated by Tim Severin.

It started out in Strasbourg anyway. But time moves on and it doesn't need to be there.
Neither Strasbourg nor Brussels was the original choice for the European institutions. Belgium actually proposed Liège of all places, but everyone else objected on the grounds that it's a bit shit. Then it was going to be Saarbrücken when it was capital of its own country.

A low bar if ever I saw one. I prefer Belgium to most other countries in Europe. Somebody had to but glad it wasn't me. The food and the beer can be excellent. Some towns are delightful. Train service good. The west has some nice countryside. BUT! Difficult motorways with service areas often even worse than Britain and can have obvious thieves and prostitutes and dealers. Much of it flat, nondescript and drab. Much bad architecture and wretched post industrial squalour.

Much of it flat, nondescript and drab. Much bad architecture and wretched post industrial squalour. I went to the most gloriously awful 'service area' last month, straddling the France/Belgium border near Doornik. It was clearly the former customs area- all it consisted of was a large badly-tarmacked area, and a vending machine for HGVs to pick up an On Board Unit for the Belgian motorway tolls. No bathrooms, but you could walk out onto the farm track ran behind it to use a hedge. The vending machine smelt like it was the regular urinal. We left quickly.

Maybe you should work with their tourist board to develop their brand. I can see 'Visit Liege, it's better than Molenbeek' as catching on.

Liege?! Shit?! Probably one of the nicest cities in Belgium A low bar if ever I saw one. I think that's unfair. Namur, Dinant, Ghent, Leuven, Hasselt, Aalst, Ostende, Knokke, De Haan, Ypres...all fabulous places. Mons, Charleroi, La Louviere, Jemappes and the Liège satellite towns (Flémalle, Grace-Hollogne, Seraing) are awful, especially the latter.

A list of 120 names and political parties that include an incredible number of diacritics, but the one capitalisation error (not even a typo) is spotted. Ain’t no-one getting away with anything on this forum. Great work from both of you. Bravo.
