It was widely reported that she wanted to become the next Secretary General of NATO but that Scholz refused to be back her. Yes, or an alternative version where Blinken wanted her to have the job, Scholz wasn't keen and she wanted to stay put. Either way, it is politically expedient for both Scholz and Merz for her to stay where she is, for different reasons.

Well, well, well. LR in France have refused to endorse VdL, calling her Macron's candidate.

I am going to feel a little bit disappointed when I watch the coverage of the Euros on EuroNews and France 24 this year, knowing that because 37% of the UK electorate believed the lies they were told, I, as someone who voted in every single European election I was able to (1994 - 2019) and a fully committed supporter of the European project will be denied my right to express my views on the European Union.

Watching the UK excluded from one of the largest mass electoral events on Earth is going to be tough. Brexit is the wound which never stops bleeding and will never heal.

Just to preempt things a bit can we please not let this thread become a Brexit back and forth, there is a whole sub-forum dedicated to that after all

Watching the UK excluded from one of the largest mass electoral events on Earth is going to be tough. Brexit is the wound which never stops bleeding and will never heal. I have often thought that the UK should hold the elections to the European Parliament as normal, just to see what would happen. The votes are counted as normal, but then nobody gets elected to anything and nothing further happens. It would be useful as a big unofficial opinion poll. Politically interested people would vote in it. Remainers would get some comfort from it. Stupid people would vote in it, thinking they are electing somebody to something (there would be a large overlap between the latter two groups). We psephologists would analyse it. Sensible people who are not otherwise interested in politics would ignore it.

And please don't answer with something about Spitfires or "standing on our own two feet".

And please don't answer with something about Spitfires or "standing on our own two feet". This is an admitted character weakness on my part and I suppose comes under the general all-embracing term of Schadenfreude? I liked the outcome for many reasons, most of which you do not wish to hear, so I shall not assault your sensibilities with them. But the ultra-emotive reactions were so tortured, so compelling and so over-the-top, that one would have been a very dull person not to have relished every minute of it; and for such a deliciously long period. I know this does not reflect well upon me but I honestly do not care one whit. In a period of other wise unrelieved political gloom and despondency, it has been my strong ray of sustainable strong sunshine.

I wouldn't worry too much about my sensitivities ... but let's leave this here or carry on in the Brexit thread before our host intervenes!

What have they got to do with the EP elections? It was an attempt at humour gently prodding the WWII obsession of some (many) Brexit voters of a certain vintage. But as I said above perhaps time to get back on topic ... so my thoughts on the EP elections.. I will largely be watching out for signs of whether the far right/left make gains or whether the centre holds once again.
