John was Deputy Leader of the Tory group. Maybe something to do with the fact that UKIP almost beat the Tories into third place in the local elections this year: Lab: 7,426 (40.4%) Con: 4,663 (25.4%) UKIP 4,621 (25.2%) LD: 1,433 (7.8%) Others: 222 (1.2%)

John was Deputy Leader of the Tory group. Maybe something to do with the fact that UKIP almost beat the Tories into third place in the local elections this year: Last week I met both John and Ann, plus two parish councillors that have also defected to us in the area. I think it is fair to say that they were deeply unhappy with the Conservative party at both local and national level. But yes, many of those now defecting to us are doing so in part because they believe it is possible to win under the UKIP banner. This is a very important step for us because it means we are gaining competent and experienced councillors who wish to carry on in that role for many years to come.

Who are the Parish Councillors and which Parish, Richard? Did they defect from the Tories or just join the party from being independents?

It was Cllr Alan Dean of Heath Hayes and Wimblebury Parish council. His wife Margaret has also joined us and I believed that she was also a Parish councillor but it appears that this isn't the case. www.ukipmep.org/News/News-2013/news_quartet_of_conservatives.htm

I first found out about this about two months ago when Dover's name suddenly appeared on the list of approved parliamentary candidates. The fact that the party leadership have not publicised this high profile recruit probably tells you everything that you need to know.

I am surprised Richard if this has been a 'secret' all this time that someone has not leaked it out beforehand ....
Like with Hamilton I see no benefit at all on taking on these people, I mean would you take on Elliot Morley for example ?

Hmmm. This is interesting, the 'backbencher' article quotes the following tweet So I looked up Tim Scott on twitter. The tweet in question is no longer anywhere to be seen. Instead this tweet appeared about an hour ago

However Richard has confirmed it and that is more than good enough for us isn't it ?
Looks like someone was caught out but surely parties should be open about their members etc ?

Does anyone know who Tim Scott is? I wonder if his new list of frontrunners was one he though of himself or if someone told him 'scrub your old tweet - these are the frontrunners now'? And who is Nigel Jones? Any reason he doesn't appear on the second list I wonder?

Den Dover, former North West Tory MEP, is now running for selection for UKIP in the South East? DO I have that right?

Where is Darren when we need him ? I guess though when you receive as Chair and deputy of the CA a vote of no confidence of 95% you might as well leave the party ... No indication as to what the issue was of course that would be fascinating.

All I know is that he did his public speaking assessment, incorrectly labelled a hustings, in the South East. That does not necessarily mean that he wants to stand in the South East.
