Tbf there may be at least arguable reasons for the party not shortlisting any local councillors, given what is likely to feature in the campaign.

On X/Twitter it's reported that Billy Howarth, of the "Parents Against Grooming" pressure group, is intending to stand here.

Barbara Castle had a minor journalistic career. Bill Deedes's achievements in politics are difficult to discern. Austin Mitchell was a lighthearted local TV broadcaster turned unpromoted backbench MP. I can recall Mitchell as a TV journalist, probably from his spell at the BBC rather than Yorkshire TV. He was responsible for for the famous interview with Don Revie and Brian Clough depicted on the Damned United. He was a great candidate in the Great Grimsby by-election holding the seat against the prevailing political mood. Remember that Labour lost what ought to have been a rock solid mining seat in Ashfield the same night.

I rather suspect they weren't trying very hard to find a local alternative, this is how the leadership ensures that their man/woman gets the nod. A tactic as old as time (or at least electoral politics). Well, of course, just suprised the paper candidates go along with it. They go along with it because THEY don’t think they’re paper candidates.

More from Michael Crick, as it seems accusations of sexism against one candidate is being fought in the time honoured tradition of text messages.

Austin Mitchell was a lighthearted local TV broadcaster turned unpromoted backbench MP. Had Crossman's two great reforms (the Redcliff-Maud local government review and the earnings-related supplement to state pensions) happened as he intended them, then he would have a claim to be a success as a politician. Unfortunately both were to be frustrated. Deedes did reach Cabinet level, though this was at the tail end of the 1951-64 government. Other examples perhaps surprisingly not mentioned yet are Chris Huhne and Denis Macshane, neither ended happily of course. In contrast to Martin Linton who kept his nose pretty clean.

There is also T P O'Connor who represented Liverpool Scotland for 44 years, as an Irish Nationalist and Independent.

Ben Bradshaw seems to have been a pretty decent journalist, and a pretty decent MP, doesn't he?

Has Tony Lloyd's funeral yet taken place? Out of respect , candidate selection and active campaigning does not normally begin until the late MP has been put to rest.
