I first heard Tony Lloyd speak when he gave a presentation to the Young Christian Workers (YCW) at St. Anthony's in the 1980s, he was certainly an inspiring speaker. It was organised by the remarkable and redoubtable Fr. Joe Carter at the St. Anthony's Centre in Trafford Park. It would amuse him to know that he will be the answer to a quiz question on "who was the first Mayor of Greater Manchester?"

I feel a batley and spen coming on. in what way? You mean Galloway standing? The political situation is very, very different from what it was at the time of that by-election.

that's true. But he doesn't tend to need much of an excuse to stand

On a different note, I wonder if we could get the first married couple in neighbouring constituencies since Mr and Mrs Balls if Cllr John Blundell decides to stand, his wife is the candidate for Heywood and Middleton North.

I wonder if the Lib Dems will launch a meaningful campaign here. They've dropped a lot recently but the seat was always traditionally a Lab-Lib marginal before 2015.

I feel a batley and spen coming on. Doubt it, Rochdale has never been a place of ethnic dispute (well, except for us Irish for a while), and the NF and BNP never did well. I will be interested to see who stands"; I suspect Andy Kelly will want to run for the Lib Dems - I have known him (and his family) for over 30 years and he is a lovely bloke, totally delusional in terms of his electoral hopes, but lovely.

I doubt Galloway will fancy Rochdale. Although there will be tension between the main mosques in Rochdale and Labour over the obvious thing, it's not likely to lead to a breach since control of the council will still be in Labour hands and the muslim community isn't anywhere near able to challenge it. Unlike Bradford and Tower Hamlets, there's no particular sign the local muslim youth are out of sympathy with the mosques and willing to organise.

I could be wrong but there was a bombing campaign at the time I'm sure there was. Tbf it happens so regularly. There's more war than there is peace

It’s unlikely to be worth their while until Labour are back in government Well, they don't have a Rochdale by-election with Labour in government, but they do have one now, and getting back up from 7% to at least 20% in a by election would be groundwork for further work on the seat under a Labour govt.
