Silence at a declaration? That’s pretty harsh even for a dictator

Silence at a declaration? That’s pretty harsh even for a dictator I do not demand silence at the declaration. I demand that the cheering be separate from the numbers being read out. If the Labour Party people want to celebrate their victory, they should wait until after the Returning Officer has said “…and seventy six” before they start cheering.

Bring back the Galloway and Upper Nithsdale guy, that's what I say. Quite so. I have often imagined that if I wrre the Returning Officer, I would invoke Mister Flynn just as he did in 1997 - and hope that the squawking disrupters would understand the reference. I have always wondered what Mr Flynn actually did by way of “assisting” the people “who did not wish to be courteous”.

There have been six Conservative defences since Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister (Selby to Wellingborough) and in those six the changes are: Con -25%, Lab +15%, Lib Dem -1%, Reform +6%, Green unchanged, Others +5% (Con to Lab swing of 20%). The average swing in by-elections after John Major's resignation as Con leader to "put up or shut up" was 19% (Satffordshire South East and Wirral South). The Conservatives have lost this year's election handsomely.

I’ve noted the odd reference to a negative Tory campaign. Any specifics? Big focus on Damien moving back from Lewisham, & an overall ‘not one of us’ in a socially conservative seat. This is not Bristol, whatever the geography might imply. Oh! How very horrid and nasty! Rochdale says Hi!!

Wow almost 11% for Reform Wow a saved deposit for the Greens - a bit of a ‘Bristol effect’ here? I would describe it as a bit of a West Country effect. Remember that we secured over 10% in the previous by-election in the south-west, in Somerton & Frome. I suspect that if a by-election was held in any constituency within the wider West Country area, including much of Gloucestershire and Somerset, we would save our deposit. Kingswood has been one of our weakest seats here, but having a councillor standing who may have some profile in the western part of the constituency will have helped.

Anyone here can factor a guess as why the win was smaller than Wellingborough?

Anyone here can factor a guess as why the win was smaller than Wellingborough? The Tories totally wrote off Wellingborough. No MPs (not just no cabinet ministers), letting Bone's girlfriend stand and other stuff. It's an effect not a cause, but it probably amplified this.

Every party has run campaigns that opposition candidates aren't sufficiently local. I guess it was a bit niggly rather than out & out nasty. The Tories did concentrate more on us & our candidate rather than themselves & their message (which I always think is a mistake, whoever does it)

The days must be long gone when that was used even as a doorstep nudge?

The Reform result, whilst a long way from being the main story, is arguably much more impressive than the one they got in Wellingborough. Any story behind that?

Lowe is a high profile candidate, who was never likely to be satisfied with just a paper campaign.
