Would a broadly right-of-centre coalition MR-LE-CD&V-NVA get a majority? Belgium is looking dangerously close to a stable government! EDIT: Forgot VLD which at present would take them over halfway. Would they all be able to talk nicely to each other? The big victory of Prévot has been to drag the LE back into discussion with other parties, rather than the weird detachment of past years. It would be stable, but not sure it has the numbers.

It's beginning to look like MR plus LE will hit 50 per cent in Wallonia. Seems like the Walloons smartly understood that Magnette is being a greedy cunt. The PTB don't seem to be doing as well as predicted either. Magnette clearly decided he had to pull left, and basically went on a bash-the-right/slag off the Flemish approach. But it has clearly failed. The PS, PTB and Ecolo are all down to some measure in Wallonia. LE alone are up over 11 per cent to 22 per cent! If that holds, that is the best result for the PSC successor parties since 1995. Edit: it also didn't help the PS that they had to beg the federal government to reassert control down the Gare du Midi.

Nearly half the voters in Flanders want to fundamentally change or even end Belgium. How sustainable is that? Extremely. See also in recent times/currently Scotland, Catalonia, Basque Country, Italy (prior to Lega getting obsessed with national power), Greenland. And ultimately it's a big logical leap to say that everyone who votes for separatist parties fully buys into their separatist goals as opposed to being perceived by some of their voters as the people who will best stand up for their community (a mistake that separatist parties themselves make all to often). And nationalist/separatist party rhetoric is notoriously all mouth and no trousers when it comes to actual separatism. Actually making the step to actually separate is often fudged ones way or another, and when referendums do take place on independence they're either sub-legal or show the limitations of their fundamental independence arguments. Separatists not even attracting 50% of the vote at elections isn't exactly going to make non-seperatists/nationalists lose any sleep.

Flanders is not Scotland: it has 6.8 million inhabitants, the rest of Belgium fewer than 5 million. This also means separatist parties have a strong position in the Belgian Federal Parliament, with around 44 of 150 seats. They have a near majority of the Flemish Parliament.

All party leaders are meeting King Philippe over the course of yesterday and today.
The MR and LE leadership are meeting for a joint session, so progress there. They are likely to take control of Wallonia in short order.
Maxine Prévot (LE) has said that there can be no government without the N-VA, and that reform of the state is possible but not his major focus. Broadly translated, he has said that LE will not be partners to a breakup of Belgium, but are happy to work to remove (quote) "Belgium's institutional lasagne". A rather neat phrase.
The PTB have told the PS to get stuffed.
A name that keeps appearing is Olivier de Wasseige, of Les Engagés. He is the former president of the Walloon version of the CBI. He's well-respected in Wallonia and might be a solid candidate for a cabinet role.

MR and LE press conference in an hour, expected to announce the formation of the new Walloon government. That was quick!
Magnette has announced that the PS will go into opposition at all levels other than Brussels.
Whoever gets the nod will be only the fourth not to come from the PS, out of 14 (not including one interim who served for 6 days).
Boulez and Prévot probably want to go federal, so it'll be interesting to see who gets the gig. Willy Borsus, the previous Minister-President, has remained in government so he might go again.
I'm going to go for a longer shot and suggest that they will go for former federal minister Marie-Christine Marghem.

In an unlikely event, the PTB/PvdA met the N-VA today.
Apparently it was very civil and the PTB were surprised to get a hearing from a party that has no intention of including them in a government.

De Wever out, Prévot in as formateur. Talks collapsed over capital gains tax, which surprisingly Belgium does not have.

We now have a Flemish government of NVA, CD&V and Vooruit. It will be led by the NVA's Matthias Diependaele...and is only one-third male. Vooruit big beast Caroline Gennez is leaving the federal government and moving into the Flemish administration.
Federal level remains open still.

Flanders, Wallonia and the Eastern Cantons are now all sorted, leaving just Brussels and the federal government to form governments.
Elsewhere, the local elections in Sint-Josse in Brussels are to be overturned due to apparent widespread fraudulent proxy voting. The mayor there is Emir Kir, who you might remember as the man who tried to stop the National Conservative conference, and then turned out to have been thrown out of the socialists for maintaining connections with the Turkish extreme-right.

Are we even surprised at this point? Same thing happens here in certain communities with postal voting, but people are too gutless to talk about it.
