A digest of some goings-on.
- The RN in France are suing Chez Nous for breach of copyright, as the latter had been using the tricolour flame (the old Belgian FN had permission). This is possibly also part of MLP's strategy, as Chez Nous are oddballs. The latter are now only standing in Wallonia, and want francophone far-right voters in Brussels to vote for Vlaams Belang! - Volt are suing the Flemish state broadcaster for not inviting them to an electoral debate. Which probably is for the best, as their programme basically consists of expat moaning and overuse of the word "empower". - one MR candidate turns out to be completely unable to speak either French or Dutch, which was rumbled after a video of him answering questions in French turned out to be AI.

I was in Belgium earlier this week for work and noted the following: - there are a lot of people driving cars with wraps advertising political parties. Particularly CD&V. - Antwerp is pretty much all NVA placards with the odd VB and Vooruit. A few VLD spotted on the roads south of Leuven. - Crossing into Wallonia on the way home and it was all MR. Nothing else. This was in Walloon Brabant.
Nipping over to the Netherlands one evening, there was not much sign of their European election. Well, there's not much in Zeeland anyway, but then there aren't many people there. A few SGP signs on farms, one or two BBB.

I've just looked at the polling - what on earth happened to cause PS and Vooruit to both nosedive so spectacularly at the same time? I also notice that PTB/PvdA appear to be polling in second please in Brussels!

Hard to say for sure, but: - Paul Magnette for the PS seems to be ruling out just about every coalition partner, and positioning himself as the main man. It doesn't seem to be working. - Vooruit are just not cutting through, and the previous leader is about to go on trial. Also of note is the massive increase in the polling position for Les Engagés.

Final seat projections I can find, from a poll on behalf of RTL. 76 seats needed for a majority.
VB 26 N-VA 20 PTB 20 MR 18 PS 18 Vooruit 11 LE 10 CD&V 10 VLD 7 Groen 5 Ecolo 4 Défi 1 Others 0
Cobbling a coalition out of that will be hard work. Nobody wants to work with the VB or PTB, the PS are basically running against the NVA, the VLD and CD&V scores are awful.

NV-A cannot be circumvented any longer - not federally, let alone in Flanders.

They've got to grow up and work with the NVA again. The MR certainly are willing to. But the PS and Ecolo need a demon. I think I forgot to mention that the N-VA are running candidates in every Walloon province this time out, which could be fun. On that note, it's 8 years since Bart De Wever was attacked by other Belgian politicians for suggesting that Merkel would end up completely discredited.

Well, he was kind of wrong, as she ended up being flat out disgraced…

Massive queues- up to two hours long- reported by RTBF in various Brussels municipalities.
Elsewhere, Prince Albert (formerly King Albert) has voted.
Polling stations using only paper closed at 2pm local time, whereas electronic voting continues until 4pm.
One or two results are already being reported. One commune in Flanders looks like N-VA on top ahead of VB. In Herstappe in Limburg (the country's smallest polling district and a beautiful part of Belgium), Open VLD and CD&V are leading.

It sounds like a bit of a shambles now. Several early results have been corrected (quite severely), at least one part of Brussels will have to keep its doors open past 6pm (two hours later) to cope with the queues, several ineligible voters have been identified, and a bloke has tried to push the leader of Les Engagés into the river Meuse.
