Castle ward in Newcastle upon Tyne is another well known and long standing example.

The canonical resource is www.cambridgeelections.org.uk/. It lists Hipkin as having stood for Labour in Newnham's No 2 electoral division in 1981 and for the SDP in the Romsey seat he'd previously held in 1985, in both cases unsuccessfully. When there was last a Conservative on the city council before the recent by-election (Shapour Meftah, Trumpington 2012-2016) I think he may have been in a group with Hipkin - certainly on things like the local plan they effectively operated as a group. I stand corrected. Trawling my memory he may have been deselected in Romsey in 1981. He wasn't a very good fit there - he lived nowhere near and was pretty aloof with the party. That might also explain why he stood in Romsey in 1985, against the person selected in his stead. Although such was the leaden-footed way of the SDP in the city, which contrived to lose readily in places with plenty of potential, they may have imagined that he might have had a personal vote there. The Liberals despaired at the SDP's lack of nous in the city.

There's loads of Castle wards - just off the top of my head I can think of Colchester, Bedford, Northampton, Leicester and Nottingham. I'd say its up there with 'Park' or 'Manor' as well as Central as a ward name that is so generic it would not make me think immediately of any one place. And while most of the Worthing ward names may be unique or unusual, Marine manages to have namesakes in both neighbouring boroughs (and had one in Brighton not so long ago too)

Marine is the antithesis for me: because I'm so familiar with Adur. Arun and Brighton's versions, I don't immediately think of Worthing. Of course the best ward names are Sir Moses Montefiore & Goldsmid You're going to make me do it again, aren't you?

I have knocked up in elections both in the former Marine ward in Brighton, and the present Marine ward in Worthing. Not in the Adur one though. We won both times. When I knocked up in Brighton's Marine ward, none other than former Labour Lord Chancellor Lord Elwyn-Jones had a vote which he cast by post. My dad knew him for many years. The Brighton ward was particularly socially polarised, since it included the Whitehawk estate but also Sussex Square which was still very posh not many decades ago.

Of course the best ward names are Sir Moses Montefiore & Goldsmid I have a theory that the time will come when the Local Government Boundaries Commission will consider, as a key criterion, the reaction and opinion of this forum in deciding ward names. Similarly, whenever there is a budget speech, the betting companies do odds on which words will be mentioned, or how often certain key buzzwords will be mentioned. My other theory is that one day a Chancellor of the Exchequer will look up the betting lists and will deliberately find a way to mention the whole list of words in his speech just to help the punters.

I have technically stood for election in all of them: Marine ward on Worthing Borough (paper candidate,2000), Marine ward in Adur District (part of East Worthing & Shoreham constituency, 2005, 2010, 2015), and all of them (Sussex PCC, 2016). Canvassed in Worthing and Adur, but not in Arun or Bognor.

Slight correction to the preview: Sam Davies wasn't the first independent elected in Cambridge for decades; John Hipkin and Marie Louise Holland were last elected in Castle ward in 2016 and 2014 respectively, though they're a slightly different case as they had previously been elected as Lib Dems in the ward before they fell out with the party. Thanks, corrected.

Henry VII may have been Welsh-born, and I admired him enough to pick him as a Mastermind subject, but describing him as Welsh is actually a bit of a stretch. To all intents and purposes he grew up in Brittany.

The worst ward to deliver in the entire city!
