PVV’s Bosma has been elected the Speaker of the Lower House. And PVV+VVD+NSC+BBB have already voted jointly on some issues. Though PVV went also with the "populist" fringes for an inCrease in wellFare, what did certainly not excite its centre-light partners in spe.

Wilders has given up on the idea of being Prime Minister. ...what reduces the chances of my Austria's Kickl in September from 2% to 1%...

PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB have agreed a common programme. Wilders will not be the PM. Rumour has it that former Labour Party minister Ronald Plasterk will lead it. Plasterk is a fascinating bloke. He was appointed by Wilders as informateur, but on the face of it, they are quite different. Plasterk is one of those old-fashioned, social democratic bruiser-intellectuals of the Helmut Schmidt type. carlton43 would approve!

Considering that the incoming administration doesn’t have a majority in the Senate exactly how much of its program will be actually implemented?

Considering that the incoming administration doesn’t have a majority in the Senate exactly how much of its program will be actually implemented? Probably not a lot, but there will doubtless be attempts to drag in smaller parties on key matters. That the rumoured candidate for PM is a PvdA man would suggest this. Likewise the presence of a SGP member and a long-standing CDA appointee as informateurs.

On a side note, the BBB leader Caroline van der Plas is half Irish, and her mother is a former CDA councillor. If you've ever wondered what Dutch sounds like with a gentle Irish lilt, here you go. One for CatholicLeft to enjoy.

Likewise the presence of a SGP member and a long-standing CDA appointee as informateurs. You could not be more wrong. Plasterk has been on a journey to the right from some time. Perhaps because he became a rich man through a questionable deal selling a patent that possibly wasn’t his and also because his party rather decidedly rejected his leadership campaign. He was a brilliant scientist, but generally viewed as a failure as Education Secretary and Home Affairs secretary. In between his two cabinet positions he was a MP for one short, two year term. He may still be a member, but probably only because he has not ended the direct debit yet. There is no way the left in general will be influenced by this candidature. Support from that quarter will be limited. All this has led to a weekly column in our most right wing newspaper De Telegraaf. In that column he’s been rather unpleasant about the PvdA, basically through what has been his style ever since years ago he was a columnist for a leftwing newspaper: taking a position from an opponent, making a caricature of it and then attacking the caricature. Add to that his long during feud with another former PVdA cabinet member, who just happens to be the leader of the GroenLinks-PvdA parliamentary party. These two hate each other with a vengeance. His chances of becoming PM are uncertain. He had a run-in with Omzigt during his period as ‘verkenner’ (literally scout). Omzigt apparently was not impressed by his sloppy work and Plasterk said something about Omzigt during a parliamentary debate that Omzigt saw as an insult. Omzigt is well known to be world champion at holding grudges. Plasterk apologized today in a letter, another cringeworthy moment in this neverending story.

I knew Plasterk was a bit of an out-there character, but didn't realise he was that far removed. I saw that apology this morning. Very weird.

The VVD has always at heart been more of a conservative than a liberal party. In the 2012 General Election Cameron campaigned for Rutte. The program seems to contain several VVD greatest hits: limitation of asylum seekers (although these plans won’t survive their first challenge in court), the speed limit will be raised to 130, several measures that benefit corporations and wealthy people and the minimum wage won’t be raised after all. Ironically the VVD parliamentary party contains two members of the current government, responsible for two areas where going forward policy will be diametrically opposite from what they prepared and defended. They both put party above principle and agreed to the proposed program. But, nothing is yet decided. In the next fase the personnel of the new government will be selected, with the intention of at least half of them from outside politics. The new government will then write a program that will be presented to parliament. This proces make take another 5 to 6 weeks.

I forgot to add: there is an investigation into the circumstances that led to him selling a patent, that may not have been his to sell. He more or less got away with that, but his return to the spotlight led the university to reevaluate their position. The investigation will take a few more weeks to finish. Under these circumstances appointing him seems a bit of a gamble, Even if they do and the investigation leads to nothing, he’s already damaged goods.

Omzigt seems to have the temperament of a child. Btw, I’m surprised they didn’t try to lure the CDA into the coalition.

One for CatholicLeft to enjoy. That's lovely. I knew of the BBB leader, here she is singing a cover of "Sweet Caroline" where you can hear a slight Irish lilt in her English rendition of the song, showing her close connection to her Irish family. She is the image of the Aontu candidate in Donegal, Mary T Sweeney.

At the moment Plasterk is the only name mentioned. He is probably the only one vain and ambitious enough to accept this position where he gets all the grief and the glory goes to backseat driver Wilders. Other names were mentioned: the most likely candidate was Remkes, a former cabinet VVD cabinet minister, often used since as fixer and as conciliator. He has ruled himself out (he’s in his 70s) and seems critical of the deal. Another former VVD star Kamp, has the right Atilla the hun attitude, but is unacceptable to Omzigt because of his role in the scandal that Omzigt revealed and that made his reputation. I’ve also seen the name of the chairman of the small businesses association pass, but he lacks the political experience you need in this role. Someone mentioned Mona Keijzer, now of BBB fame, but that was probably Mrs Keijzer herself because no sane person would think she’s remotely qualified.

According to social media the cringeworthy public apology that Plasterk made, was demanded by Omzigt.
Omzigt was not a popular member of the CDA parliamentary party, they tried to get rid of him, the members gave him a place on the list that looked unpromising, but local voters in the then CDA heartland of Overijssel saw him elected.
He is notoriously bad at making decisions and extremely petulant. If you put one over on him, he will retaliate. He is an econometrist by training, and is a details man, who has trouble seeing the larger picture. I’ve worked with people like this and they drive you insane.

And right on cue, Omtzigt has turned up for a meeting with Plasterk! It worked then...how bizarre. As I wrote earlier, there are other issues. There was a bust up earlier, when Omzigt complained that Plasterk failed to distribute important information to the 4 leaders. The other 3 denied this had happened. Plasterk complained Omzigt had disrespected the role that Plasterk had at that time. The youth wing of NSC takes the position that Plasterk can’t become PM since there’s an investigation into his financial dealings. Such an investigation was precisely why Plasterk’s predecessor as verkenner had to step back. They point out that the party has been extremely strict when selecting its candidates, to minimize the risk of embarrassment
