Decent turnout (relatively speaking). I eventually found a tweet which said that the turnout is 31,002. As usual I am annoyed by the multitude of people telling us that it is 46.23% but without telling us the number.

Shaun Ley of the BBC has grown a beard, thereby making him look older. For contrast, here's Shaun Ley looking younger.

Shaun Ley of the BBC has grown a beard, thereby making him look older. The BBC election programme is better than expected so far, with proper facts and good graphics. I switched over to Sky briefly to compare, but they were on adverts. In my view it looks like Ley has converted to Islam.

Verification must be in full swing so they must have a fair idea by now. Lab gain by 3k is my guess. As someone who has worked on the campaign for the last month, I'd be over the moon and happy to take that. My own private prediction at the begining was a 1000 votes either way, for which I still believe could be the case. David Simmonds MP has just been on Sky and reckons the result is about an hour away.

Sky just went live to the count in Ruislip and not many of the counters appear to be doing anything.

The BBC coverage (just switched it on) is a lot better than most election programmes. They seem optimistic that declarations 'soon-ish' in both Uxbridge and Somerset.

Sky just went live to the count in Ruislip and not many of the counters appear to be doing anything. An “expert” on Sky said that there is a “bizarre” counting procedure in Uxbridge, ut he didn’t specify what he meant. I guess it’s the normal process of verification and then mixing and then counting, but that the expert wasn’t familiar with it.

It will be annoying if Uxbridge and Somerton & Frome declare at exactly the same time

It seems to be something to do with a dress code tradition for count staff. They wear a specific colour on each day of opening postal votes, the RO dons a tie when about to make the announcement. There may be other peculiarities. Maybe they don antlers or paint themselves with woad depending on turnout etc.

Sky just went live to the count in Ruislip and not many of the counters appear to be doing anything. A slight caution: when I was at the count for Ealing Southall, the count proceeded normally and properly, and then the result, was declared normally. When I got home I read through the thread of comments on the internet (I think it was mostly on politicalbetting in those days) and I was bewildered and frustrated because I found lots of people moaning and complaining and asking why there was a “delay” and why was it taking so long. There was no delay. People misinterpreted what they saw on TV and thought it meant that the result was imminent, when it simply wasn’t.

It will be annoying if Uxbridge and Somerton & Frome declare at exactly the same time When I was at the count for Bromley & Chislehurst in 2006, I asked the Returning Officer if he was going to keep in touch with Blaenau Gwent to make sure they didn’t declare simultaneously. He looked at me blankly and said no, as if it hadn’t even occurred to him that it might be a concern. It was almost as if he thought that the by-election was for the purpose of electing an Mp instead of providing instantaneous data for psephologists.

Just had a call from a Labour cllr at the count and have been told that it is very close - could go either way.

Bundle check or full recount? Full recount of Labour & Conservative votes, plus checking of bundles of all the others.
