Has Mad Nad been appointed to Northstead yet? No she hasn't. Does she have an ulterior motive such as voting against the Privileges Committee report to carry on for a week or so longer.

Dorries hasn't been doing anything in Parliament - she hasn't made any speeches or asked any questions in the Chamber since leaving the Government, and last took part in a vote on 26 April.

No writs yet issued. Is 20th July now the likely date?

Yvette Cooper meanwhile seems to ‘put on’ a Yorkshire accent (or at least making her northern vowels very pronounced). She is a Scot by birth, so Yorkshire is South for her. All aside, nobody challenges the accent of Londoner Liz Saville-Roberts, although it appears painfully acquired, as, even after all these years, I would have thought that there'd be some London twang. She grew up in Alton though, so her natural accent would be southern. Depends how old she was when she moved.

Not everybody picks up the local accent, especially if they're close to extended family who are from elsewhere. There can be an element of choice (i.e. as a small child!) to this as well.

A lot of people assume I’m a foreigner from down south because my mum brought me up right proper and told me ‘ow to pronounce things - instead of leaving it to the West Yorkshire environ.
It’s slightly disappointing when I tell them I’m from Wakefield.😅

(About from "tomato" - I wonder why that one spread throughout the country to displace the correct (American) pronunciation.)

It is a matter of Italianate scansion with regularity in each syllable to - ma - to.

According to some reports the decision not to allow Dorries to go to the House of Lords was made months ago and Johnson was aware of this. Is this true? If so, is she intending to remain in the Commons until the General Election?

Although it isn't immediate as we would normally understand it

Given her statement on Friday, why can't Hunt just appoint her to Northstead and get on with it?

Given her statement on Friday, why can't Hunt just appoint her to Northstead and get on with it? When the Sinn Fein MPs resigned, it was an unusual situation because (understandably) they didn’t want to be appointed to an “office of profit under the Crown”, so Osborne merely needed to make sure they definitely wanted to resign. Equally, they would have understood that he had to make the appointment in order for their resinations to become effective, despite their not wanting the position. This situation is different because Dorries might conceivably have changed her mind about wanting to resign (just as she changed her mind a few days ago about not wanting to resign). So the Chancellor would not be acting fairly if he appointed her to the position if he isn’t sure that she still wants to do it.

Are you really expecting this government to be enthusiastically rushing towards the chance to have a Mid-Beds byelection?

Aren’t you lot just being a tiny bit impatient? She only announced it as her intention a few days ago. It’s not got a time limit on it.
