Two vacancies in Cardiff, both caused by resignations of Labour councillors: Luke Holland (Splott and Tremorfa) Phil Hawkins (Riverside) The later is a very odd one, in May he was one vote away from a successful challenge for the leadership of Cardiff Council. Why should someone totally new to the council consider himself suitable to be it's leader and why would a large number of his colleagues vote for him ? This decision of him to now resign shows a lack of judgement by him and those who voted for him .

Luke Holland was accused of not attending many council and committee meetings recently. He's moving to London because his wife has been appointed in a senior role in the Labour Party. So, who is his wife?

If it ends up unopposed, I'll laugh heartedly

Never mind unopposed, I've seen a few Parish Council by-elections where some electors have demanded an election, and then no-one has stood at all!

That is really messy because it doesn't revert to co-option it has to readvertise. I remember one like that in teignbridge (Bishopsteignto I think) in about 2002. And I don't hink political parties played any role so I blame real electors.

Sheffield MB, Arbourthorne - Labour died 23rd October As we have annual elections I'm hoping everybody keeps discreetly quiet for a couple more weeks so it'll be pushed into a double-vacancy next May. I worked with John Robson, the late councillor for Arbourthorne, (mostly on Licensing) and he was one of the few really effective councillors I've known.
