Sadly it is not 4 weeks people have to keep quiet (polling day is 22nd-ish May) as the 6 month rule applies from when the RO officially knows of the vacancy. So people need to keep quiet for 6 months.

An interesting by-election beckons in the Golcar ward, Kirklees on 21st November. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of Paul Salveson owing to his increased workload as a board member of Passenger Focus.

I used to work for Kirklees Electoral Services By-elections were a rarity when I worked there but with it being a county year, they've had quite a few. Interesting to see if Christine Iredale can do enough to get back on the council this time round.

Third one since May: I think I mentioned at the time that Frank Wilkinson (Storrington) had been ill for some time; Mick Hodgson (Warnham & Rusper) I hadn't known about but apparently it was an existing condition; and John de Mierre was already ill as well - I had been told by the LibDems at the Storrington count that this one could follow soon after.

This one should be electorally much more interesting, as Storrington and Warnham & Rusper were both pretty solid Tory seats. HHEast had been won by the LibDems in 2009, but they dropped to 4th in 2013, with UKIP not far behind the Tories. 365 votes between 1st and 4th in May. Tories will be keen to keep it, UKIP will want to show they haven't dropped away everywhere, LibDems will want it back and Labour weren't far off in May without doing anything, so if they could move some people from Brighton to do some work, they might make an impact. Plus, there'll be a Green candidate this time
