MEDWAY UA; Peninsula (Ind died) Candidates: CROZER, George Josiah Thomas (Independent) HODGES, David Christopher Graham (Labour) JACKSON, Sharon Leigh (Independent) OGUNFEMI, Harold (Conservative) RIST, Ben Darryl (Liberal Democrat) SPALDING, Chris (Independent) SUTTON, Julian Charles (Green) 2019: Ind 1413, 1125, 734, 512; Con 1157, 834, 792; UKIP 1002; Lab 449, 399, 298; Grn 446, 442, 371 Looks like an error's crept into the indy results here. Where? The figures here match LEAP and the council website: www.medway.gov.uk/info/200318/local_and_parish_elections_2019_results/884/peninsula_ward_results_-_local_and_parish_council_elections_2019

D'oh, of course it's just the way presented here that made me knee-jerk seeing four results.

I've never understood the obsession with this. Why not count the following day when it's cheaper, and you have regular staff on site to do it. And everyone can have a good night's sleep. ah but we can't John, we lose sleep worrying about the results. Well I exaggerate, but it might well be true of the candidates in a closely contested ward or constituency. Mind you, when we made a minor electoral breakthrough in Mortlake in a 1997 by-election (our vote went up 11%), I couldn't sleep for sheer excitement, but even more for working out how to capitalise on it (which we managed to do the next year). That was counted on the night as are all elections except London-wide ones in this borough. We count all-out council elections the next day here and I can't understand how taking all night and some of the morning as well would make it better.

This now has me wondering how high I am on the list of famous former Gilberd School pupils.

LINCOLNSHIRE CC, Spalding West - S Holland Ind hold S Holland Ind 676 C 393 Interesting in comparison to the District Council result! Looking at the maps on Andrew’s preview there is not much shared territory between the district ward and county council division, which might help to explain things.

They also had a much more established candidate for the county seat, which might have had some part as well.

You don’t need to count the votes in Newham to know the result of the election though so it’s just a formality rather than an exciting climax to the process.

NORTH DEVON, Landkey - LD gain from C LD 374 C 237 Grn 228 Lab 36 Which I believe gives us majority control of the council (previously Lib Dems held exactly half the seats).

Stratford Olympic Park is something of a demographic outlier - well over half of its population work in professional or managerial jobs in a borough where barely a quarter do overall. Only Royal Victoria comes close to that figure (and may in time become a Green target - their 2022 result there wasn't awful). Perhaps elections will become more contested but it remains to be seen whether the Greens can break through in the more diverse and working class wards found elsewhere in the borough.

Yes the Olympic Park ward is a massive outlier. There is some gentrification in the Forest Gate wards though so it will be interesting to see if the Greens put in any effort round there.
