More speculation about the Conservative candidate today, after Minister for London Paul Scully said he might like to have a go.
Andrew Boff is always up for it, but may find that the Conservatives just think he's too much of a maverick. There are some trying to get Shaun Bailey to stand again.
The absence of big names indicates a general lack of confidence in the ability of any Conservative to win the post, despite changing the electoral system. But be it remembered that Boris Johnson was a late entrant, when other more credible names had refused to stand.

But be it remembered that Boris Johnson was a late entrant, when other more credible names had refused to stand. Cameron extended the "deadline" for nominations, not once but twice, to find a suitable candidate. At the first "deadline" Nick Ferrari was the likely candidate. At the second (what is it with Tory radio presenters?) it was Mike Read, who then supported Johnson.

Why does he bother? He has never come close to winning the Conservative nomination.

Andrew Boff is 66 in 2024 so it's probably his last shot at the nomination, but he'd still be the underdog if he gets it. I wonder if Justine Greening may get conscripted to run.

Andrew Boff has been around in London politics for ages - first elected in Hillingdon in 1982, council leader there in 1990-92, and one of very few people to stand in three different boroughs. But although he's been on the Assembly for 15 years he's still not well known outside London politics obsessives.
I wonder if winning the Conservative nomination, and exposing some of his more maverick opinions to the whole City (and country), might actually be the worst thing that could happen to him.

Tory candidate in Hornsey and Wood Green , 1992 General election. Beat Hugh Rossi's daughter (among others) to the nomination.

If I recall, he had another daughter who was politically active as well.

If I recall, he had another daughter who was politically active as well. If you mean Marie-Louise, she was indeed very politically active - a Baker Street councillor on WCC for eight years. She had the foresight to get out of the Conservative Party before it became toxic for her moderate pro-European stance. Sadly died in 2014 but she had made a big impact. Think I met her once at Federal Conference (and she was a regular on the ballot for internal elections).

Could ULEZ expansion to the whole of Greater London hurt Khan's re-election chances? TfL make bank off it, iirc.

Reminiscent of the battles between Bromley and ken Livingstone's GLC in the 80s There's similar aggro going on in Greater Manchester, where the Clean Air Zone has been pushed back again. One bloke told the Evening News that it was ridiculous that he'd have to pay as a resident whilst the Teslas coming in from Cheshire sat in traffic outside his house.
