Using weird abbreviations like that (“L P” and “G P” instead of “Lab” and “Grn”) is a bit Maoist in my opinion. the abbreviation LP for Labour Party is quite common even amongst the party's supporters, though I never use it myself. Those of us from a certain generation will always see LP as the Liberal Party. That forgets all about the All., the SLD, and the Lib Dems subsequently.

Labour will be cursing that one a bit, like Warrington last week. But at least it didn't mean the Tories coming through the middle as in Gloucester a while back. It is frustrating. Goes back to distinctive image conversation. I do take issue with Ben Walker suggesting an absence of campaigning outside an election is why we lose. He's right too many activist think handing out leaflets counts as campaigning. But we did a long campaign last year. Starting about now. I remember leafletting and knocking on one woman's door at least five times (January, February, April and May) and she still told me she voted Lib Dem because she didn't see me enough A woman once complained to me on the doorstep that she only saw us at election time. It was October, and the elections weren't until May!

The first year of work would produce no tangible results, but would lay the groundwork for the future. Absolutely borne out by my later experience both for LibDems and Greens: too many campaigners give up before you get to the point of familiarity

Requires people giving up time with work and family. I probably do two or three sessions a fortnight when I want. As a candidate it was two or three a week and not as flexible. Can't really commit

Alfred Mond is in some way related to Gary Mond, who is the founder of the National Jewish Assembly - a right-wing & distinctly small organisation which thinks that the Board of Deputies is too moderate & not uncritical enough of Israel. Gary was the Conservative candidate for Mansfield in the 1992 election, where he was unfortunate enough to be on the end of the largest swing to Labour in the entire country that election. I thought at university he was a typical Jewish Tory from the London suburbs and didn't realise until we chatted years later that he actually has hereditary peers in his family.

I have assumed it is the family that inspired the character in 'Brave New World'?

I think they did say posting would be irregular for a few weeks, hopefully back to normal soon.
