However we start from a long way back there. Obviously not far back enough ... The signs were there on Twitter…… I wish I had looked at it before I made my prediction!

Labour HOLD in West Lothian

It's a very Brexity part of the world is West Norfolk, like nearby SE Lincs & NE Cambridgeshire. If the Lib Dems are able to break through in this kind of area it's interesting and suggests that the saliency of Brexit as an issue is declining quite a bit. Of course it's a local election, but the Lib Dems have not been doing well in any kind of election around here (as opposed to North Norfolk whose politics have long been different from NW Norfolk) for a long time and this is rather a remarkable result. A much better week for them than of late

At least I was closer to getting the result right in West Lothian though

GWBWI
LDm +183 Lab +126 Grn +57 SNP +4 Con -366
ASV
LDm +3.1 Lab +2.8 Grn +0.9 SNP +0.1 Con -6.1
These include Surrey on Wednesday, but not the unopposed win in King's Lynn & West Norfolk.

That's actually a very good result for Labour in W Lothian. As they topped the poll at Count 1, it‘s very good.

Although the Lib Dems were able to win quite Brexity areas in eg Eastleigh or Taunton, in the 2019 Locals when Brexit was at its peak. I guess what might be a problem is if Rejoin is a policy that the Lib Dems are keen on, what happens if they vocalise that. There could be a risk that they can only do really well electorally if they don’t pursue a policy that a core of the party cares passionately about.

After quite a long period (couple of months or so) of relatively poor results, we seem to have got back on form in the last fortnight

Labour HOLD in West Lothian Nitpicking again, but the maximum number of stages when there are 8 candidates is 7, so must have been elected before stage 8.

Lib Dem gain Gaywood North & Central. A painfully low turnout. But once a foothold is gained, by narrow margins and with minimal levels of enthusiasm, then a local grip can be built if the councillor is decent and has a campaigning team (as opposed to an imported group of by-election enthusiasts). It doesn't look great LD territory on the face of it.

Labour will be cursing that one a bit, like Warrington last week. But at least it didn't mean the Tories coming through the middle as in Gloucester a while back.

Lib Dem gain Gaywood North & Central. Using weird abbreviations like that (“L P” and “G P” instead of “Lab” and “Grn”) is a bit Maoist in my opinion.

Labour will be cursing that one a bit, like Warrington last week. But at least it didn't mean the Tories coming through the middle as in Gloucester a while back. It is frustrating. Goes back to distinctive image conversation. I do take issue with Ben Walker suggesting an absence of campaigning outside an election is why we lose. He's right too many activist think handing out leaflets counts as campaigning. But we did a long campaign last year. Starting about now. I remember leafletting and knocking on one woman's door at least five times (January, February, April and May) and she still told me she voted Lib Dem because she didn't see me enough
