The Glasgow count could have been short-circuited by eliminating the four bottom candidates together at Stage Two, since the Alba Party candidate would not have survived, even if she received a transfer of every single vote of the the other three candidates. This technique is sometimes used in Northern Ireland counts. It may be but I think there's a lot to be said for sticking strictly to a one candidate at a time elimination. You can sometimes get to the winner sooner, there's less potential for confusion with fewer bundles flying around and crucially it better reflects how the system is explained to the lay voter.

Another change which should be made for single-seat (ie AV) contests is to publish the final stage numbers on the first page of the declaration with equal prominence to the first stage. As it is, the press frequently ignore the final result figures, which are hidden away. In a recent by-election, the final result was much closer and involved a different runner-up. None of this made the local paper's report, which nevertheless claimed to have given the "full result".

Thanks - the three votes transferring from Alba to the Tories is hillarious. The three UKIP- Socialist transfers remind us that there are a few voters out there who are anti politics and will vote for the least mainstream party irrespective of left/ right. More likely putting candidates in random order?

One voter may have successfully played the fabled Irish game of 'rank candidates in ascending order of first preferences'.
