If voting was held over two days the polls could close at about 7pm on the second day and most results could be announced before the small hours. Or we could just accept that it takes time to count results and we don't need instant overnight gratification.

First you have next day counts, then you have 2PM counts, and the next thing you know we are like California and don't have a full set of results a week later.

Or we could just wait until 10:01pm and make up our own results, declare them official, and ignore any other pretend results which the council pretends to declare a few hours later.

3 pretty narrow wins for Labour in the North West tonight. 79, 32 and 7 vote majorities. Blackburn South and Lower Darwen is in my parish, this is an impressive gain for Labour. The idea of a narrow win is not the same as in Oldham.

Tories becoming the party of the middle-class Asians with the only Asian candidate andrewteale describes the Ward in his preview as “one of the white working class Wards of Oldham”, so unlikely.

A complete misunderstanding of why votes in the USA take this long to count. If you want instant gratification rather than a proper process then forget elections and try Youtube cat videos.

Votes take longer to count in some places than others because some authorities are more efficient than others. Compare Sunderland with Tower Hamlets or Florida with California. Those that take a long time are rightly derided.

Or we could even be like Australia which Constitutionally can’t formally declare a result for something like 19 days. Antony Green is of the opinion we don’t care about accuracy only speed.

I have been to as many counts the next day or even later (in the days of EU Parliament elections the count was not until Sunday - or Monday in certain places out west) as I have to counts on the night - and almost half the latter is made up of single member council by-elections in an urban borough.
