There is absolutely no reason to delay getting the result unless there is something that genuinely makes an immediate count difficult. Also, leaving the ballot papers unattended overnight can give the perception, whether right or wrong, that there could be a risk of them being interfered with. Probably not in the Shetland Isles, but in a place where there is history of election malpractice (say Tower Hamlets) it coud help to undermine public confidence. I spent a night in Stoke’s nuclear bunker under the Civic Centre with the Deputy Returning Officer, BNP Agent and all the (full) ballot boxes; he was convinced there was a conspiracy to interfere with said papers, and the Returning Officer agreed he could stay with them, at which point the Labour candidates decided he shouldn’t be left alone, and drew lots for who should stay with him. The atmosphere wasn’t helped by the fact that the Dep RO should have been on honeymoon so was in a bad mood to begin with. This forum could write more than just the Almanac with stories like these.

Rhondda, Cynon, Taf. Abercynon Lab 520 PC 56 Con 56 Green 18 Great result for Labour, shocking for Plaid. It would have been even better had the Cons beat Plaid by say 1 vote.

Didn't the BNP also have a practice of attaching their own seals to ballot boxes in some places?

I don’t know of them doing it here, but I became housebound so unable to attend the count for their last couple of years.

What's the problem with next day counts Mainly that politicos get upset if they can't get excited by declarations at three in the morning. For Westminster it's because the above managed to get an absurd law passed back in 2010 when many councils planned a next day general election count because of cost and the increase in postal votes to process. That year our seat's declaration came through at 10:00 so I remain to be convinced it was a good move. Ballot papers have been stored securely in Tower Hamlets in previous elections that either start the next day or run into later days. There was an election petition eight years ago in Hackney (next door to Tower Hamlets) that kicked up a spurious fuss about the council election counting the next day and the ballot boxes being stored overnight that completely failed to demonstrate there was any problem except perhaps that it should be easier to get election petitions thrown out early when brought by nuisance litigants.
