Well, Cheshire is Labour-run and it's not all thanks to Crewe. True, but you'd imagine much of the Labour strength in Congleton even in a bad year would be concentrated in Sandbach and maybe Alsager. Meanwhile in Tatton, Labour often don't run candidates at all. It isn't entirely impossible that Labour could win either seat but I could well imagine places like Wilmslow, Poynton or Disley voting for Tatton to go Lib Dem rather than Labour, as there's a strong demographic continuity from Cheadle and Hazel Grove. Historically there has been Labour strength in both Congleton and Macclesfield. More recently they have also done well in Middlewich. The dreadful Conservative administration running up to 2019 allowed a Labour - Independent administration from 2019. Alsager has been Liberal/ Lib Dem for 40 years. In Cheshire West there's plenty of Labour support in Chester, Northwich and Winsford.

Sandbach is currently 3/4 Labour and the council leader is from there (with an independent deputy Leader from Alderley Edge, of all places).

When exactly is this by-election going to take place? Since Ms Cooper is not taking up her NHS office until 1st November there will not be enough time to schedule this by-election to coincide with the City of Chester by-election. I am guessing 8 or 15 December 2022.

This is not the case, actually: the by-election rules allow for a 21 working day timetable, so it would be possible to move the writ as late as Wednesday 2 November and have polling day on 1 December (notice of election issued Thurs 3 Nov, deadline for nominations Tues 8 Nov) and perhaps that is the plan. However I'm not sure that there's any great benefit, either from the point of view of the Labour Party or that of the councils concerned, of the two being on the same day.

I'd imagine it will be held on the same day as the Chester by-election.

Don't think it can be squeezed in to a December 1st poll now even if Chester is held then, maybe a fortnight later?

Quite a force locally, got a number of seats on the council (including all three in Derby, my ward). Set up by disgruntled Tories I believe. Doubt they'll stand in the by-election.

With Cooper's disqualification still not having taken effect and hence the writ not having been moved today, 1 December is no longer a possible date for this by-election.

No sign of the by-election date still. Here's the coat of arms the council use in their Twitter handle and website while we wait.

Ormskirk's parish church, there - apparently one of only three churches in the country to have both a tower and a steeple. It's the resting-place of multiple Earls of Derby, including the one who got his head chopped off in Bolton.

annoyingly that has made me think of a limerick I read many years ago which went something like:
a lady from (insert name of one of presumably 3 towns) said a spire, is to what every good church should aspire. her sis with a glower said a church needs a tower. so they built one with both, and its dire
I guess it wasn’t Ormskirk as it wouldn’t scan

No sign of the by-election date still. Rosie Cooper made a speech in the Commons this week, so she might not even have vacated her seat yet.

No sign of the by-election date still. Rosie Cooper made a speech in the Commons this week, so she might not even have vacated her seat yet. She is still listed as an MP on the Parliament website, and that is normally updated fairly quickly.
