When will the Lib Dems learn? Election pacts is what precipitated their demise a hundred years ago and the growth of the Labour Party. Why do them with the Greens and send the LDs into insignificance? The Green Party at the moment has the branding, publicly recognisable policies and captures the zeitgeist for a section of the centre-left to left. I'm not even sure I know what LD policies are at the moment, and most of their MPs would indeed be Pointless answers. Why give the Greens any room to grow? They won't be so forgiving to the LDs in future?

Regardless of the merits or otherwise of such an agreement, I would rather that there is a clear, deliberate reason that we are not standing instead of simply not being able to find a candidate. Looking at the 2019 result, it seems almost certain there will be an agreement between the two parties, as they had 3 candidates between them for the 3 seats. However, it isn't unusual for either party to struggle to find candidates willing to stand in seats, especially ones they have a realistic chance of winning. I know from my own experiences here in Bath, where the Lib Dems must have one of their strongest local parties, how much the Lib Dems struggle to find willing candidates, as they spend much time trying to poach ours!

Given the result earlier this year I would expect a Labour gain, especially as there’s no credible independent.

TBH, when I first looked at the SOPN I was half expecting to find a reciprocal arrangement with Felpham - but then I looked at Felpham and there was neither Green nor Lib Dem there (perhaps tacit support for the indy).

I think the independent bit is a hangover from when the five eco-socialist defectors from Labour joined up to run the council with the Greens. The Greens won 10 seats in 2019. They gained one in May at a by-election. Then three more when those eco-socialists formally joined. www.lancs.live/news/lancashire-news/three-lancaster-city-councillors-switch-24595180The article states that two of the new members (Faye Penny and Alistair Sinclair) will be standing next year as Green Party candidates in John O'Gaunt ward.

I'm certainly concerned that we have only got two candidates out of five wards, and one of those will I presume be a token gesture

We have the same phenomenon in the Redditch by-elections coming up shortly. While I can understand the logic and desire for 'double-hatting' in two-tier systems (while generally disapproving it), representing a completely different area on county and district baffles me.
How common is this? Are two examples coming up in close proximity simply random chance?

The odd-looking one for me is Felpham, where you would have a slim chance (as would others, including ourselves who are also not standing), so I wonder whether there is an informal agreement with one of the Independents?

Lancaster is the one I presume we will fight properly as we have done well in a number of by elections there in recent months. As you say, the one that looks the most odd is Sussex

How common is this? Are two examples coming up in close proximity simply random chance? There is a Labour triple hatter in Bridgwater, Leigh Redman who has moved between areas of the town a lot. He currently represents Hamp on Bridgwater Town council. ( this is in Bridgwater South county division). From 2011-19, he represented Dunwear, which is split between Bridgwater East and Bridgwater North divisions He represents Hamp on Sedgemoor District Council ( he previously served Dunwear ward on that too) He is the councillor for Bridgwater South on Somerset County Council. ( includes Hamp) He will represent Bridgwater North and Central on the new unitary. That means that he has represented nearly all the Labour bits of the town at one stage or another in the last decade,

Impressive.

I might work out how many there are at some point,

Not sure, but I think the Con candidate in Barnham is the same Graham Jones who was an candidate for West Sussex (Felpham) in 2017 (Ind) and 2013 (UKIP), and for Arun (Middleton) in 2019 (Ind) and Felpham West in 2015 (UKIP)> Happy to be corrected if not.
A friend of mine lives in Barnham (Arun), and has posted on facebook about the election. He's had a leaflet from the Tories which is very proud of the fact the recycling rate in Arun is 42% (doesn't mention this puts them 163rd inn the country), and wants lots of houses buit - but everywhere else but Arun (should get him some nimby points).
My friend has also had his door knocked by the Green candidate. He (a pretty staunch Labour guy) seems to have been quite impressed by her. I'm impressed by the fact she knocked on his door - Joe is very rural and very difficult to get to. The Greens are obviously taking this very seriously.
