This is certainly an interesting set of contests to kick off the post-Johnson era.

LANCASTER DC; Warton (Con resigned) Candidates: HARBISON, Iain Scott (Conservative) KENRICK, Faith (Labour) PARSONS, Jane (Liberal Democrat) TYLDESLEY, Sue (Green) 2019: Con 307; Grn 214; Lab 129 2015: Con 529; Lab 266; Ind 248; Grn 178 This will be the 10th by-election in Lancaster this term. Sue Tyldesley stood here for the Greens back in 2015. Current Council: Lab 16; Green and Ind Grp 14 (11 Grn & 3 Ind I think); Con 9; Morecambe Bay Ind 6; Ind Grp 5; Bay Ind Grp 4; LD 4; Non-aligned Ind 1; 1 vacancy Wondered if this was the same Sue Tyldesley that I vaguely know. Looked her up and it is - a friend of my mother's from Southport Quakers. Nice woman.

I understand that the Royal Mail has issued an alert regarding Royal Mail strikes. They have advised that post returned from around 5 September could risk being delivered too late and are urging postal voters to return their postal voting packs as soon as possible.

They are all counting on the night including one that is doing the count in a polling station so that shouldn't take long to declare

Terrific map for the Warton (Lancaster Council) ward; it reminds me of 1st Form geography lessons on OS maps where you'd be given a map with an extraordinary range of features and symbols that you had to identify. Slightly disappointed that there are no glasshouses or high-low tide features, let alone a Church With Spire.

Not only is Barnham a railway junction, It's also a ticket type. Travelling via Barnham (essentially a South Coast special) saves money but costs time. In the event you need to wait there for an hour, there's a decent enough pub ten minutes away from the station.

Are these by-elections going ahead? If so, will the count be postponed until after the offical state of mourning ends?

Are these by-elections going ahead? Surely the polls opened before the announcement.

They'll presumably count the votes as usual, but in a rather quiet sombre atmosphere. At the count of the 2001 general election, Richmond Park & Twickenham were counting in the same hall. It was known that Vince Cable's wife was desperately ill and there was an unusually hushed & serious atmosphere. She was unable to attend the count & died only a few days later.

By the looks of it, Three Rivers still held the count for a parish election. Really it will have been a difficult call when the election is part way through whether to postpone the count. I don't think a local by election can be cancelled once called, except if a candidate dies, but the councils involved in next week should really consider holding the count the following week after the funeral.

The RO took advice and was told the election and count should go ahead and conclude. All the parties stopped all activity as soon as the announcement was made. I suspect next weeks elections may well be postponed ?

Does anyone know whether that was the election where the count was at the polling station, and therefore expected relatively early?
