Maybe London boy Milliband was looking for an excuse to cut his remaining ties to the constituency he has used. That, and a chance to be in the news again.

there are differences I would agree but Mussolini who Di Canio adores was very quick to get into bed with Hitler. His salute was it a fascist or NAzi one, very difficult to tell the difference. Maybe because the Nazis copied the Roman salute from the Italian fascists

And Mussolini wasn't quick to get into Hitler at all. He sent troops to the Brenner Pass when Dolfuss was assasinated, but wasn't backed up by the Western democracies.

Anyways, some amusing outbursts of vicious self-parody from our resident kippers et al.

IIRC a former BNP organizer who left them to join a Darwen local party and then became a Labour councillor in 2012. ah right thanks, no not happy with that but the football manager is the same as the PM in football fans eyes, a local councillor would be a reserve team player. Did Maxfield ever relent over his time in the BNP ? well he still hangs out at far-right rallys to swap notes with his chums...

A local councillor is a local politician. A football manager is a football manager. One would have thought the political views of the former would be more relevant to their position than the latter

The Chancellor can appoint him to the Manor of Northstead at any time whether the house is sitting or not. What they can't do is move the writ for the by-election until the House returns from recess. He doesn't actually start his new job until September, so it is possible he will not resign immediately. Has he missed the cut of to 'resign'/get the writ moved for a 2nd May By election?

Would be irrelevant anyway - no May 2nd elections in South Shields as it's a Met area.

Given that we held Durham even in 2008 I doubt there'll be too much worry there. If the Lib Dems crash as badly as they have in demographically similar areas, you could be looking at a Labour group not much short of 100.

Some Labour names that could be interested in South Shields:
- Iain Malcolm as we have all understood. - his brother Cllr Ed. He's allegedly not a particular shining star. Ahead of a past selection, there were rumours he was undertaking public speaking training. He got 0 vote in Middlesbrough selection. - Tina Roche. She has confirmed she will apply. Previously shortlisted for Redcar, she is assistant branch secretary of Unison South Tyneside. - Sherie Murphy. Previously shortlisted in Redcar too, she represents Boldon Colliery ward on South Tyneside Council. - Emma Lewell-Buck. Recently shortlisted for Carlisle, she's another South Tyneside Cllr (her ward is in Jarrow constituency. - Can the runner up in Middlesbrough selection (Progress backed and pushed by David Miliband at the time) be interested in South Shields? He's from Teesside rather than Tyneside. - Lewis Atkinson. He run for the NEC in 2012 outside of the official slates (IIRC he got a decent vote). In the past he stood for local elections in both Sunderland and South Tyneside. He's from Gateshead CLP.
And obviously a couple of SpAds, a Cllr Hussain and some Islington Cllrs.

Is the same system of voting that got Brother Ed elected? One member one vote, then the Unions the NEC, and the various factions thereof, get to decide who they want? Fixed. (as it were)

Any Labour member who doesn't live near the River Tyne shouldn't bother applying...
