looking at 2010 there are quite a few BNP votes for UKIP to target and could well be a distant second in this one.

Labour History Group @labourhistory MT @delaval_astley South Shields is reputedly the only UK constituency never to have had a Tory MP since the Great Reform Act in 1832

@sammacrory 15m No James Purnell, no Alan Milburn, now no David Miliband. Labour's heirs to Blair don't hang around...
As Ed Miliband is clearly swinging to the loony left (TAX MORE! BORROW MORE! SPEND MORE! HATE AMBITION!), perhaps this is just what happens when centrist MPs can see the Union hell about to be unleashed.

UKIP ought to take second place without much problem. Both the Tories and LDs are deeply unpopular in South Shields so I don't think they'll be troubling anyone except for the returning officer as he calculates which candidates might have lost their deposits.

"@darcytip 4m Best parallel to D Mili is Michael Portillo. Didn't quite want leadership enough; zest for politics drained after lost it."

It's a pity, almost a tragedy, for the Labour Party that he's going if this story is confirmed. He has considerable leadership potential and would have undoubtedly made a more formidable opponent to us than his brother. A career cut brutally short. He's taking a charity job in the USA apparently, which is reminiscent of Bryan Gould's departure to New Zealand in 1994.

Agree this is a likely UKIP 2nd place in the current climate.
The loss of the better Milliband is a blow for Labour. They must have been hoping he would return to the front-bench, where he would be a major player compared to the other pygmies there.

and hardly harmed us Gould going did it ?
As Dok posted (not the nonsense rant) that DM did not quite have the killer instinct when he needed it. Would he have been tougher for Cameron, just not sure at all, he was hardly electric performer, (quite dull at our hustings) and was more tied in with Labour policy that Ed was.

David Miliband was Labour's best choice for leader in 2010 IMO. He would certainly have entered No. 10 at some stage I think.
