"South Shields is the only constituency never to have had a Tory MP since the 1832 Great Reform Act, acccording to @labourhistory":twitter.com/KenReid_utv Exactly how this is worded makes the difference though - until 1885 it would also have been represented by the county seat which had Conservative MPs at times. Some of the reporting of this is ignoring the fine distinction between seat and place. (And no constituency has had a Tory MP since 1835...)

I wonder if Ed would have done something like this had David won the leadership.

I don't know if Ed will see it as putting family first...

"South Shields is the only constituency never to have had a Tory MP since the 1832 Great Reform Act, acccording to @labourhistory":twitter.com/KenReid_utv I am confident that that is untrue. There may also be boroughs which were never represented by a Conservative, but the statement is untrue because anyone in South Shields was also represented by the Members of Parliament for the County of Durham (Northern Division) which included one Conservative at all points between 1837 and 1885 save for 1864-68, a few months in 1874, and 1880-81.

Someone in Preston appears to be having a very convivial evening. Good job he's not got a council meeting to go to.

I don't know if Ed will see it as putting family first... you think this makes it harder for him ?

I've been drinking for most of the night, David, and Preston Council is about as far away from my concerns as you are from my Christmas card list. I imagine the same is true from your perspective

His political talents have always been vastly overrated. That may well be true, but compare him to the rest of the Labour front bench...

Will this be an AWS for Labour ?? That would be an excellent way of handing the seat to UKIP. Seriously.

Just another quitter.
If he was genuine about making things better for the people who elected him he wouldn't get fkd up about not being the leader.
Good riddance to another poseur polly.

Enforcing AWS, potentially upsetting the locals, could cause all manner of problems. Recall Rotherham?

Dok, sometimes I wonder if your polemic hatred of Labour has just stemmed solely from the Preston bus station decision, because you never used to be such a right-wing attack dog.

It wasn't exactly an embarrassment of riches though tbf. I think he was a reasonable candidate.

No byelection is an AWS in the sense that only applications from women are considered, but some of them end up with a shortlist without any Y chromosones. Rotherham was an example. Oldham wasn't; there were two men and one woman on it.
