There are currently 106 known vacancies and possible impending vacancies, many if not most of which will be contested on 2nd May. This thread starts by identifying all these vacancies, split by party which initially won the seat although some former councillors have subsequently been sitting under another description. It also identifies those elections called for after 2nd May.

ALDC list Barking/Dagenham Longbridge as being on May 9th . I don't know if this is correct . Clearly in London there are no CC elections being held concurrently on the 2nd .

Neither the Council website nor David Boothroyd has it listed for a particular date.

Thanks, Middle Englander, for a very helpful list, which I have checked against my notes.

Another notice of vacancy has appeared on the Vale of White Horse website for Abingdon Peachcroft ward, where Peter Jones (Con) has "ceased to be a member". This is a split ward, with the other seat held by a Liberal Democrat.

You have not listed Cliftonville East in Thanet. My understanding is that Sandy Ezekiel has been disqualified. Are you waiting for the Council to declare the vacancy formally?

Notwithstanding the Council's own Notice of Vacancy, the correct spelling of the Forest of Dean ward appears to be Bromesberrow and Dymock, according to the statutory instrument, the ONS census information and the HMSO election maps website.

Finally, can anyone tell us how to pronounce Streonshalh, the Whitby ward in Scarborough?

Judging by the spelling, the ward owes its name to a time when Bede was contemporary history. There's partial pronunciation guide for reconstructed Northumbrian here, but I highly doubt whoever decided to name the ward was aware of that.

There is a second vacancy on Wellingborough Borough Council that will be contested on 2nd May.

It's the Redwell West Ward, which was represented by Conservative Councillor John Raymond, who has resigned due to ill health.

I am not an expert on electoral law, but I believe he has appealed against conviction and or sentence. In these circumstances disqualification may not apply until the appeal has been determined.

A bit of googling give me 'Strenn-shawl.' Viking name for Whitby apparently.

It's actually the Old English name for Whitby. The Viking name for Whitby was Whitby.

I've identified 25 meaningful town/parish council byelections so far, which I was going to pass onto listener to decide if he wanted to highligh any of them, but I suspect there's probably another 100 town and parish council elections out there.
