Anne de Montmorency was a man. Yes I know he was. The beard in the portrait was a bit of a clue.

Ensemble candidate has dropped out of their race This is one element of French election law that I find seriously weird. That you can just cancel a runoff like that.

It would be more democratic for the next placed candidate to take the place in the run-off if the runner up doesn't want to do it. Then at least people get a choice.

It's a really nice place. Posh but not ridiculous, with some decent bars and restaurants. I've been on a couple of day trips from Cranfield, once with a colleague who insisted on calling it L2K after he'd seen a pilot write it down like that.

Bourouaha would have faced a disso PCF candidate, also of Arabic background.

Yes I know he was. The beard in the portrait was a bit of a clue. So why the 'but' in your original post? Because it is an interesting fact that there was a Chief Minister in the 16th century who had a first name which is usually a woman’s name. For example, it wouldn’t have been interesting if I had written “France has had two woman prime ministers, but it also used to have a prime minister called Lionel Something”. The fact that I already knew that Anne Somebody was a man was already obvious, because I described Edith Cresson and Elisabeth Borne as the first and second women prime ministers, rather than the second and third (quite apart from the fact that he was obviously a man because of the portrait and the information on the Wikipedia page. Therefore, logically, you should not be asking me why I wrote “but”. You should be asking andrea why he told me that Anne Somebody was a man, even though I already knew.

A bit of news that should be quite independent from the elections but that some find illuminating of the messages the government has to its electorate :
They are always looked at in the news media: the subjects of the philosophy exam of the Bac that is held today:
- are artistic practices transforming the World ? - Is it for the State to decide what is fair ? - Does freedom consists in not obeying to anyone ? - Is it just to defend one's rights by all means ?
And two extracts from Books I didn't read yet. One from Diderot's encyclopédie on human testimonies, errors, prejudice, and trust of those testimonies. Another from an Essay by Cournot on scientific proof
