Wikipedia is a bit vague on the subject of where he (Nellist) is originally from - it just says "North Yorkshire", which is a very big place - but IIRC he's from Guisborough, where I lived for a while, and went to the local school that I attended later. But he's been in Cov for quite a long time now.

That'd make a lot of sense - his accent is definitely more Teesside than anything else, but is also much milder than what you'd get in Middlesbrough itself. He definitely sounds like people I know from down Guisborough, Stokesley, Yarm way.

He was a candidate for Earlsdon ward in 1978. I don't have the dates he served on West Midlands County Council to hand, so I don't know if he was elected there earlier or later (I suspect later, since he doesn't appear on the ballot for any other Coventry wards until 1996). This announcement makes me wonder if he's finally given up on standing for Coventry City Council now he's no longer even in second place in St Michael's.

Dave Nellist is standing for TUSC Last time TUSC stood here, in the 2015 general election, they polled a piffling and miserable total of 212 votes. Given that Dave Nellist's support base is in Coventry, not Birmingham, I doubt he will poll much better.

Paulette gave me my second Covid jab when she was volunteering at the vaccination centre at Millennium Point. I'm not normally that good with injections, but she was very efficient and quick! /photo/1

Well it’s very different from North Shropshire. Paulette Hamilton is deeply rooted in local politics, and resident in the constituency. Seems like a good choice to me. Despite my serious reservations about the Labour Party, I’d vote for her.

'Former Socialist MP.' Maybe he isn't a socialist anymore. Is Keir Starmer a Former Socialist MP? The forum needs to know! Starmer's socialism is deeper and much more sincere than most people assume. He was part of the editorial collective of the Pabloite "Left Alternatives" and a major contributor. Although the Pabloites arose from the Trotskyite movement, it's questionable whether they still are Trots or whether they were when Starmer was involved with them, however they are definitely Marxists. A big part of the schism from the Trotskyite movement was the concept of "deep infiltration" where instead of simply joining more moderate left wing movements while keeping some sort of links with fellow Marxists- as with Militant - those who infiltrate are expected to lose all ties. The problem being, the more orthodox Trots probably rightly pointed out was that those trying to infiltrate would gradually go native - and they were hardly acting as the vanguard if they weren't sticking together and keeping themselves open to continued political education\indoctrination. Unlike Blair and a clutch of New Labour figures who admitted to being Trots at university and in some cases a bit afterwards, Starmer has never intimated that this was a mistake that he grew out of. Left Alternatives wasn't that much of a fire breathing Marxist periodical (although the issues that are on the internet are rather turgid and they do seem to find far too much to like about Tony Benn for anyone sensible) and he probably didn't consider whatever Marxism he had to be really Leninist at all. But Starmer's a deep red socialist and has never given any indication that he's not. Thinking that Corbyn went about it a completely inappropriate way is simply common sense and hardly treachery to any socialist cause.

Has the House of Commons had a session of tributes to Jack Dromey? When the Speaker informed the House on 10th January of his death, I think he said that there would be a separate session for tributes beyond the brief comments which were made then.

I think the Speaker said prior to the Prime Minister's statement that the tributes will be on Wednesday.
